Cirque Berzerk! Decadence, Debauch and Daring Elegance in Downtown Decayed Districts

July 1st, 2009 by

Cirque Berzerk is going absolutely berzerk in Downtown L.A until July 26. If you are in the L.A area and have not seen this show, please go to it as soon as you can allow yourself the time to truly enjoy it. This is a modern-day drama-fable circus extravaganza, set in several different dream-like locations where all is naughty but nothing is truly revealed; couples in gorgeous dress and rippling muscles of both persuasions fall in love through pretending to be swans; monochrome dirt blood warrior harlequins vogue for your soul's control, and a Weimar zombie cabaret swoons dead choons ranging from Sarah Vaughan to disguised P-Funk ballads. We happened to catch the preview show before opening night and were profoundly happy and delighted with how absolutely dope the show was. A standout contrast between this Cirque and other performance groups with Cirque in their names is that the Berzerkers exude a sexiness and raw, psychedelic zeal that connects you in a much grittier, viscerally satisfying way then most any circus experience I've ever had. Factor in their on-site bar tent next to the Big Top and you have yourself one dazzling wow-out effing good time. I forgot to mention this, but Cirque Berzerk was birthed from a tribe of performers who expanded their repetoires and minds at Burning Man, about half of whom are/were in the performance art-rock-noise group The Mutaytor. Also this particular band of mystic wildies are people who made the Cirque happen in life and money by virtue of their concentrated efforts and not much else. So rejoice. Cancel your boring dinner with jabbery friends and drive down here to the only red-and-white heart still beating in the downtown derelict district, where fire flies and classy broken-couture-clad sexy fiends drive you mad with their dance trances, come and know what used to be a little bit of the magic and sweat of the real dirty but supernatural Circus.

Oh, and Flaunt photo ace killer image thrash whiplash-smith (re: that photo kid you should know about but don't yet) Sarah Sitkin came through, set up, and straight slayed it (climbed up the metal sign and hung off it with one hand, camera in the other, aiming with her 6th sense hand if y'all even did anything raw like that in yr lives). Thank you Sarah for the besss mayne
