Here at Flaunt, survival is our base mode of thinking. It often entails which outfit to don for the night's shenanigans, juggling the various consequences oft associated with the antics of alcohol, parties, dating, and the bad decisions that inevitably follow. LA can be quite the jungle, but lucky for all of us, we no longer need to go at it ignorantly. Though Don Mann and Ralph Pezzullo don't necessarily offer any tips for navigating El Lay's nightlight scene, they have penned, “The U.S. Navy Seal Survival Handbook”, which works as the ultimate guide to braving the elements. Next time you find yourself making the 6 a.m. trek up Sunset Blvd, dodging catcalls as your smoky eye slowly migrates down your face, you’ll have some sound advice to carry with you.
Among the tips and strategies, we’ve found several that are applicable to our daily lives. Hypothermia, for example, is a valid concern. Too often we find ourselves walking from one bar to the next, only to realize that our jacket was relinquished at our first destination and forgotten. Forced to face L.A.’s bitter climate sans jacket, it’s helpful to know some of our options in case disaster were to hit - hot water enema anyone?
But in all seriousness, you never know when you might find yourself in an Amazon jungle. Renowned navy SEAL Mann, along with Pezzullo, provide a detailed account of ideal responses and necessary actions with regard to finding water and food, staying warm, dealing with bug, snake, and scorpion bites, and escaping quicksand – little tip: move your feet in a circular motion. So even though we never have, nor do we ever plan to go on any solo expeditions through the Sahara, it’s good to know that we now have about a 50% chance of surviving.

"The US Navy Seal Survival Handbook" is now available through Skyhorse Publishing.
