With the Fourth of July right around the corner, and countless public presentations halted in light of Covid-19, people are starting to celebrate by holding their own mini firework shows. But are they _really_ mini? It seems as if the folks of the internet have collectively come to believe that there are more fireworks exploding across the country. . The abundance of at-home firework shows has caught the attention of celebrities: former Disney star, Skai Jackson, tweeted, “Am I the only one who keeps hearing fireworks in LA every night?? What is the reason”.  > Am I the only one who keeps hearing fireworks in LA every night?? What is the reason 😭 > > — Skai Jackson (@skaijackson) [June 22, 2020](https://twitter.com/skaijackson/status/1274922446328434689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) In come the theories. Is Katy Perry behind this? She demonstrated she could shoot fireworks from her chest in 2010. Is this the upgrade? Are people playing their music too loudly since they can’t go to concerts and it’s being mistaken for fireworks? Implausible, yes, but there are some that are more sound than others: **Boredom.**  Stay-at-home orders have kept us inside our homes for the past several months and people are tired of it. It was bearable during the winter months, but now the sun is out people want to go outside and have fun.  > my fireworks conspiracy is fireworks are really easy to get and everyone’s bored and out of work > > — ☕netw3rk (@netw3rk) [June 22, 2020](https://twitter.com/netw3rk/status/1274912934326439936?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) **Boredom = More free time to conjure up conspiracy theories.** A lot of summer staples have been closed for the time being. Pools, movie theaters, amusement parks are off-limits, leaving people with more time to think up elaborate theories. Why not indulge a Two-fer, a BOGO, of artillery shells that will keep the neighborhood bouncing? And as is the American way, probably trying to outdo one another. Maybe we’re just so used to the quiet that these fireworks sound louder than usual. It’s tenable with fewer sirens, no sporting events, diminished traffic, and so on. After a somber first half of the year, people are happy to finally celebrate the biggest summer holiday. And many subscribers to all things illuminati would presumably like a powerful and resounding commencement to a new unknown? Photo Credit: Fireworks by Phantom. (fireworks.com) But not all the conspiracies are as lighthearted or should be brushed off. In the midst of a political revolution, theories become more about power and control. . **The fireworks are being set off by cops.** Firework complaints have been going up in New York City as June progresses. Some people believe cops are setting off the fireworks so there are more complaints and more problems for them to solve. Solving these problems will make them look like “good guys” during this time when people are fighting to defund police departments and bring awareness to police brutality.  > Yo this firework conspiracy theory might be on to something 👀 a mission to get residents in the hood to call the cops as a ploy to show people they need cops, thereby destracting folks from defunding NYPD 👀 [pic.twitter.com/c5PQOqepuA](https://t.co/c5PQOqepuA) > > — Paola Batista (@P\_izzleYo) [June 22, 2020](https://twitter.com/P_izzleYo/status/1275130484268380162?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) **It is an attack on the Black Lives Matter movement.** Twitter user Robert Jones, Jr (@SonofBaldwin) has created a thread, with thousands of likes, going into complete detail of this theory. The thread theorizes that the abundance of fireworks is a form of psychological warfare meant to “disorient and destabilize” the Black Lives Matter movement and desensitize us from the sound of gunfire or possibly even to mask the sound of gunfire. > My neighbors and I believe that this is part of a coordinated attack on Black and Brown communities by government forces; an attack meant to disorient and destabilize the [#BlackLivesMatter](https://twitter.com/hashtag/BlackLivesMatter?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) movement. > > — Son of Baldwin (Robert Jones, Jr.) (@SonofBaldwin) [June 20, 2020](https://twitter.com/SonofBaldwin/status/1274341689864400896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) **The fireworks are being used to scare protesters.** This theory ties into that of @SonofBaldwin ’s. Fireworks could be mistaken for gunfire, scaring people demanding change and pushing them to stay inside and halt protests.  Photo Credit: Mindy Schauer ![Photo Credit: Mindy Schauer](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c346b607eaa09d9189a870/1593805537331-W9YUS9HSI7ZVOYIJAKUF/FireworkExplosion_FLAUNT.jpg) Photo Credit: Mindy Schauer Whatever the cause, whatever the origin, this country will never be short on opinions, and certainly never short of gun powder. Enjoy the weekend, perhaps craft your own theory, and protect your dog, because whatever the origin: they don’t like it.
