Only 27-years-old with countless acting accolades and roles under her belt, actress Anne Winters has long been the one to watch. As a series regular on the hit Netflix show 13 Reasons Why and a recurring role in the FX phenomenon Tyrant, we have witnessed a career snowballing into something momentous as the years continue. The Emmy Award-winning Winters is gracing the screen again this fall, starring in the 3rd installment of Seth MacFardlane’s sci-fi show, The Orville.

Texas-native Winters has a plethora of credits atop the aforementioned, including roles on Wicked City, Night School, and Zac & Mia for which she claimed her first Emmy award. This next role on The Orville, Charly Burke, which we had the chance to discuss with Winters, is a testament to her gifts, cunning, bold, and complex. On top of that, Winters is taking on a behind-the-scenes role producing the screen adaptation of the juicy and introspective coming-of-age young adult novel The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes. The novel tells the melancholic tale of a breaking music star, Cassidy Holmes, with touches of Almost Famous and Daisy Jones and the Six. This actor has proven herself a worthy talent time and time again, and it's a joy to see her finding more and more creative space and range.

Who is Charly Burke?

Charly Burke is a badass navigator who can visualize multiple dimensions faster and more accurately than anyone else aboard The Orville. She’s smart, and challenging, very excited for people to get to see this new role. Charly is very different from any other character I’ve played in the past.

What’s it like on set of The Orville?

The Orville set is incredible, not only is the actual set design beyond any other show I’ve worked on or seen in my life, but everyone is a family and fun to work with. It’s a very interesting dynamic to work on a spaceship all day and be in that world. We were shooting a while before Covid and being back on set now even with the new protocols, is still an adventure everyday.

Can you tell me about The Orville and what fans can expect from season 3?

My character is completely new this third season. Since the first two seasons were already out on Hulu, I was able to binge watch them both before starting work which was great. I got to get a full sense of the show and became a fan from the beginning. I think fans can expect a completely upgraded version of the show, not only are the sets completely new and upgraded, the CGI, and storylines this season make each episode its own cinematic movie.

What drew you to The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes?

I started reading a lot during quarantine, and had always wanted to find a project I could start producing. When I was 3 chapters into The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes, I immediately contacted my team to start getting the rights to the book. Another thing I learned during quarantine is how to create my own opportunities in the industry. This is a passion project that’s coming to fruition, I’m very excited.

Is producing something you've always been interested in?

Producing has always been a passion for me, but working on 2 shows at once for most of my acting career made it seem far away. I didn’t have the time or know how to get to that producing step. I’m learning a lot more than I ever thought I would even just in the beginning of this journey. It’s exciting, and anything that makes me more well rounded and knowledgeable in this industry is fun to me.

What has been the most surprising thing you’ve learned from optioning a book?

It’s a process. Every step along the way is its own challenge. You have to listen and learn and keep asking questions. I’m in charge which means I’m involved in multiple different moving parts that make up the big picture.

What are you most looking forward to with this project?

I’m looking forward to successfully creating something that I love from the ground up. That’s very fulfilling. I’m also looking forward to having this project out there. I know it will be a hit show that’ll bring light to this new world that we haven’t seen much of on TV.

What are you most looking forward to as a producer?

I love acting, but getting to produce and start a project from the ground up that I’m really passionate about is the dream. I think this will be just the beginning of my entertainment career wearing multiple hats. I love learning and growing, never being stagnant. The world is my oyster. P.S. I love oysters.
