Hiscock](https://www.instagram.com/charliejhiscock/) has had a whirlwind of a year. With roles in BAFTA-winning, Emmy-nominated series _Secret Life of Boys_, Apple TV comedy series _Ted Lasso_ and BBC TV movie _The Borrowers,_ Hiscock began acting at just 9 years old. After his debut in British TV series _Combat Kids,_ the actor took a break only to return to the field when he turned 18. When he isn’t on screen, Hiscock uses his free time to brush up on his cooking skills and learn one of the hardest languages in the world—Japanese. _Flaunt_ asks Hiscock all about Ted Lasso, the topic of masculinity, and artistic growth through acting. I had no idea what on earth I would be letting myself in for besides the scripts I had received online and only the very last episode of the season which was hilarious. So when it aired on the screen for the first time, I too was seeing everything for the first time and I too fell in love with the show! But everyone was like a family on set and welcomed me with open arms! **_Ted Lasso_ is so centric on a new kind of masculinity. Did you have off screen conversations on how to reflect that?** I feel like we all have conversations that reflects the kind of masculinity that is portrayed on the screen in Ted Lasso, and I feel like what is written so brilliantly by the writers and portrayed on screen, shows and puts into words the kind of conversations that we have when we can’t even speak about them ourselves. Which is why this show is hitting everyone in the heart and making it more and more relatable. **You've been acting for over a decade now. Where have you noticed your biggest artistic growth and change? Did you have any conversations as a cast about that?** Yeah, I’ve been acting for a long time now. Gosh, I feel old! However I did have a pause when I was 10 years old to focus on my education, so I think my biggest challenge was possibly restarting my career when I turned 18 three years ago and basically reinventing myself, as I don’t look anything like I was when I was nine years old…thank goodness! And there will obviously be roles which will be challenging, but although they are challenging, I find real excitement in that. **Why do you find a show as healing and open minded as_Ted Lasso_ is so valuable in today's world?** This show came out at time when the world needed a big hug and I’d like to say that the show was the TV version of a big warm hug. As like I said earlier, it relates on so many different levels you couldn’t even put it into words! So when the world was very down and ill and needed someone/thing to rely on and have that bit of warmth in the heart again, Ted Lasso came along and did just that in the most unexpected surprise in the way almost an underdog and I love the stories of underdogs! So to be a larger part of it in season 2 is a privilege. Putting smiles on people’s faces is what I love to do. How did you say goodbye to the show?** It was so sad to say goodbye to the show which holds a place in my heart, all the shows I’ve worked on hold a place in my heart for different reasons! It is where I met friends for life, learnt so many new things about myself, and it was challenging as we were the first UK production to get back under way during COVID times so we were almost guinea pigs in this new COVID era whilst filming. It was challenging. It was tough. We had to isolate away in this bubble, in which I was living with my friends and co-stars Neil Reynolds and Gene Gurie which although was tough, we had some great laughs and I feel like that’s the best way to see off a show. **One of your more recent projects is the new thriller _The Wrong Place—_a stray from your usual genre. What drew you to the script? Did you enjoy exploring the thriller world?** This was my first show that I managed to land after returning to acting when I turned 18. It’s an independent film we did back in 2018 and is still in production. It was so much fun! What I love about my career so far is that each of my characters are nothing alike especially this character in comparison to Will in Ted lasso this character is misunderstood and has so many layers like an onion and I enjoyed doing being able to work and develop intensely on this so much. Here too I have made friends for life in the form of my co-star Isobel Laidler and it was a great thrilling experience. **_Serious_ question. Will you share a brownie making secret with us? I burned some last week and need help.** Honestly, I would love to but if I told you, I would have to kill you and honestly that’s something I don’t see on my to do list today so I will keep it a secret for now! * * * Photographer: [Kim Hardy](https://www.instagram.com/kimhardyphotography/)
