Let’s take a trip back to the 20th century. In his debut Fendi collection, Kim Jones found inspiration not only in Fendi’s own history, but in the Bloomsbury Group, diving into the imaginative minds of sisters Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell.
“I like how this family of people—and particularly these two pioneering sisters—moved things forward,” notes Jones. “I admire the way that they lived their lives, the freedom that they created for themselves and the art that they left behind for the world.”
Woolf’s Orlando, a novel and love letter between Woolf and Vita Sackville-West, is worked into the romantic collection’s 19 looks, whether through leather boots, metal-bound book clutches or lines from the writing inscribed into Mother of Pearl minaudières. Hints of the sisters and the history they created can also be seen in the gowns embellishments, the beading on boots, woven jacquards, intarsia furs, hand-beaded tailoring, and hand-painted heels.
The collection mixes femininity and masculinity to create androgynous looks, reflecting Orlando and the conversation it inspires on gender expression and identity.
Also sprinkled through the collection are glimmers into the Italian luxury house’s past. The Karligraphy monograms from the late Karl Lagerfeld’s last collection are beaded into boots and velvet ribbons from a vintage bag are given a new life.
