The New York-raised, California-based singer-songwriter was born in the African nation of Mauritania, and 6 months later her life would change forever. Following the war that broke out between Mauritania and her parents’ native Senegal, Marieme and her family were forced to escape. To date, her experiences yield a powerful theme in her musical vision. Now, she returns with her newest video titled “Freedom,” premiered exclusively on Flaunt. The song and video in which she sings, “Love is all we’re here to fight for, why do we keep getting by for?,” is paired with an explosive animated visual — making a statement that freedom should not be taken for granted. As an African woman who came to America at a young age and hated the way she looked because her surroundings made her feel like she wasn’t good enough, Marieme understands that how she perceives herself will unlock the keys to the universe. It’s everything and nothing, it just is! This video’s for everyone but I wanted to make a powerful piece of art to help liberate the black community further, because our trauma is still prevalent and it’s important to have reminders of who we really are and the power we came from!” Always fascinated with the 3D space, it wasn’t until the pandemic began that Marieme discovered her avatar to take over and do things in the virtual world that were limitless, invoking the power in her music that she couldn’t portray in real life. Scanned by a company called Human Engine, she teamed up with the amazing creator Dave Dorsey who directed the video and brought her vision to life. Marieme adds, "This music is more important now than ever, people need to know that they have the power! This is the time where we shift the energy of the world, to create a better world. With everything going on from the protests to the elections, people are beginning to mobilize and be motivated, they’re beginning to understand where the power lies, it lies with the people! We are the people! We’re organizing in the name of all the people that have been taken from us." Check out the video for “Freedom” below!
