The exhibition features the work of the three Nigerian artists Marcellina Akpojotor, Tonia Nneji and Chidinma Nnoli, whose work surveys the interlocking dialogues between gender, femininity and a desire for self-authorship against the dominant forces at play in both Nigerian and international society. The works highlight underlying issues regarding the marginalization of identity and trauma for Nigerian women. Rele Gallery, founded in 2015, specializes in representing up-and-coming Nigerian artists whose artistic work feature themes surrounding critical issues in modern society. “Los Angeles has become a central destination for the arts at all levels, especially for emerging voices, and I look forward to bringing a greater cross-cultural appreciation for African art and the many ways in which it is so tied to our present contemporary moment,” said gallery owner and founder Adenrele Sonariwo.
