This week marked the opening of Alicja Kwade and Agnes Martin: Space Between the Lines at Pace Gallery in Los Angeles. On view now through June 29th, the exhibition features Polish-German Artist and Flaunt featuree, Alicja Kwade’s large-scale sculptural works and installations in dialogue with works from painter Agnes Martin (1912-2004).

Curated by Kwade and Arne Glimcher, Pace’s founder, Space Between the Lines explores Kwade and Martin’s shared interest in the subjectivity of time and space and its relation to perception. As Glimcher notes, “Both artists have been involved in the possibilities of line, both bring a meditative sensibility, and both are interested in questions of time. Both make works that reveal themselves slowly, with time. I have always felt Agnes’s work is closer to music than it is to traditional painting, and with Alicja, there is a parallel sense of adjacency with other modes of perception.”

The exhibition is anchored in two new works from Kwade Distorted Dream (2024) and Distorted Day (2024), in which carved rock floats between glossy black curved steel plates and angular metal framing. Both pieces are connected to Kwade’s ParaPivot series, which explores astrology, the works almost suspended in motion like an imagined solar system model.

Around the perimeter of the gallery, Kwade’s in-situ work, created with graphite directly on the wall, forms a series of day-to-night intervals determined by the space itself. With this, Kwade charts a course around the gallery, leading viewers to nuanced and meditative works from Martin, which explores time, perception, and connection between her person, materials, and the canvas.
