Despite being relatively new to the Nashville scene, Audra Watt is already causing a stir, mainly thanks to her heart-on-sleeve approach to songwriting. For those who need evidence of this, listen to her new single, ‘The Good Of It,’ which is out now.
Audra Watt has released her latest single, ‘The Good Of It’

Audra Watt has shared her new single, ‘The Good Of It,’ as she marks herself out as a promising alt-country lyricist.

For those who haven’t yet heard Audra Watt, the singer-songwriter emerged onto the Nashville scene only a few short years ago - after a lifetime of learning and growing up with music.

Audra was a songwriter and played numerous instruments throughout her youth - everything from orchestral music to jazz bands to rock bands - and developed a unique connection with country and blues music when she attended university in Nashville.

But she stepped away from her passion after college, deciding to take a full-time job that allowed her to provide for her family. By the time she was able to reconnect with music properly, she had turned 40 years old.

In many ways, her return to music at this part of her life felt fated. Audra had evolved in new, exciting ways and built a loving family; all of this meant that she was able to bring new emotional heft to her songwriting. This is absolutely clear to see in her two single releases to date, the brilliantly executed song ‘ Bullet Trains’ and her newest single ‘The Good Of It.’

‘The Good Of It’ is one of those songs that makes you stop what you’re doing and lean your ear out to listen to the lyrics. The song is billed by Audra Watt herself as an “alternative country song.” The production includes some “spooky sounding mandolins and guitars and really cool harmonies” to boot. For fans who have spent the last few years falling in love with the earnest lyricism of fellow alt-country star - and critical darling - Waxahatchee, then Audra Watt’s music is absolutely up your street.

‘The Good Of It’ is a song about trying to categorize memories as they shift and slip away in the mind (“First time I drove past our old place in years/Pruned my roses, the tree disappeared/Tried to picture us on the lawn/But the place I remember is gone”). Audra’s voice remains poised - but always verging on the edge of heartbreak - as she tackles that incredibly human experience of realizing that the past is slowly slipping away through your fingertips. She consoles herself against this experience by reaffirming that all that’s left is “the good of it.”

This is another winning song from an artist who has shown a lot of promise in her first few single releases. Expect to hear more from her in the coming months.

‘The Good Of It’ is out now on Spotify and other streaming services. Find out more about Audra Watt here
