BETWEEN FRIENDS, the brother-sister duo known for their genre-fluid sound, have dropped their latest single, DJ, on April 4th, continuing the momentum of their bold new era. Following the critically acclaimed release of American Bitch, DJ marks a significant evolution in their sonic landscape, one that has been further elevated by the masterful production of pop icon, Max Martin. This pulsating, late-night anthem seamlessly weaves BETWEEN FRIENDS’ signature dreamy textures with Martin’s undeniable hit-making prowess, creating a hypnotic, synth-driven track that captures the euphoric and chaotic essence of an unforgettable night out. With its magnetic melodies and infectious beat, DJ solidifies the duo’s reputation as fearless sonic innovators.
In their own words, BETWEEN FRIENDS describe DJ as “our take on a cult classic bass-driven love song… an ode to the dance floor,” born from the warm summer air of London and brought to life in a New Year’s Eve celebration. This latest release, along with American Bitch, heralds an exciting new phase for the duo, showcasing their ability to evolve while maintaining their unique aesthetic.
Let's talk “DJ" – Can you take us through the track's development, and how it signals a new chapter for you, especially in relation to "American Bitch"?
This whole album feels like our biggest jump yet. American Bitch is like the gateway into it. We really designed it all to be heard on massive PA systems.
As a brother-sister duo, how do you navigate the creative process together? Are there specific dynamics or rituals you’ve developed over the years that keep your collaboration fresh, and how has this dynamic shifted as you've moved from bedroom pop to larger collaborations?
We are both always trying to impress one another creatively when we are working. Making sounds together for as long as we have, we’ve just become so locked in on our collective vision. bringing our friends in as well. There’s never a moment of doubt or second-guessing.
You mention that "DJ" was created in the warm summer air of London and filmed at a party on New Year’s Eve. How did these distinct environments influence the energy and vibe of the song, and did any unexpected creative moments arise from these settings?
We wanted every inch of this album to feel lived in like your favorite jacket. there’s this element of total transparency that we’ve always wanted to be able to connect our work to. you’re not seeing a fabrication this is just who we are.
Your music has always pushed boundaries with its genre-blending style. How do you maintain your genre-fluid aesthetic while evolving your sound with each release, like with the direction of "DJ," and what are some of the key artistic choices you make to ensure this balance?
Trying to impress each other and also trying to impress ourselves is a major key in our sonic evolution. living, experiences, testing demos at berghain, playing the song at club space, all these steps along the way are the reason for what you hear, it’s all life’s fault.
Working with Max Martin is a milestone. How did his influence specifically shape the sound of "DJ," and beyond the technical aspects, what was it like collaborating with such a legendary producer on a personal level?
A blessing. He’s the chosen one, he’s a literal wizard to the highest degree.
With your debut album i love my girl, she’s my boy and your continuous experimentation, how do you approach the balance between personal expression and the expectations of your growing fanbase, and what are some of the most meaningful interactions you’ve had that informed this balance?
This community we’ve built over the past few years has grown beyond our expectations. we always made our art for us, the fact that it resonates in people’s homes and lives and on their speakers and along for their experiences is the biggest trophy. every encounter, every meeting with someone that listens to us changes the course of our whole day.
You’ve described your creative journey as an experiment in boundless creativity. Looking ahead, what’s next for BETWEEN FRIENDS? Beyond just future releases, what kind of artistic experiences or collaborations are you most excited to explore, and what surprises might you have in store for your fans?
How do you say everything without saying too much?
‘WOW!’ coming soon. it's a cult classic
