Egonlab and Zadig&Voltaire join forces for a demonstration of what happens when established brands collaborate with young artists. Egonlab, founded in 2018 by Florentin Glémarec and Kévin Nompeix, echoes the already prominent ethos of freedom and expression from Zadig&Voltaire. Both brands, which consistently feature relaxed, unisex garments with a clear edge for leathers, distress, and hardware, make for a seamless blend of creativity presented in this collection. This collection represents the inherent shared experience of fashion, one that pays homage to new and old, chic and edgy, and most importantly the fashion influenced by our world and our people.
Each look presented on the runway had an incredible attention to detail. Look 01 features a sleek black look, and a long trench coat with a bright, textured collar. The buckles at the ankle of the black slacks create shape and texture, setting the stage for a richly innovative collection. The use of certain textures throughout creates a unique cohesion between looks. This includes an all-denim look featuring a jacket with an extended collar, folloed by a look with a long denim scarf reaching the model's boot.
While the long lines, and trendy pieces contribute to the awe of the collection, the leather garments and looks demand attention. Looks 36 and 38 feature the same garment construction with different leathers. The black look is accompanied by a stark white fur coat, creating contrast and taking up space on the runway. The brown leather look is worn in and relaxed, emulating the look and feeling of vintage leather. The seams are a mark of detail that make these looks special, particularly the seam placement around the ankles, calling back to the buckles in the first look and other silhouettes featured on the runway.
The finishing touch to this collection is the bags. The leather shoulder bag includes a long fringe and leather teddy bear key chains. These are the most prominent markers of youth in the collection, and strongly represent Egonlab’s essential contribution to this collection. Featured in black, brown, and pink and matching the materials presented on the runway, these bags will soon become a staple of youth culture's love and obsession with unique bags featuring markers of authenticity.
Ultimately, Thierry Gillier’s decision to bring Egonlab on to this collection gave viewers a breath of fresh air and youthfulness. This collaboration sets the stage for designers to follow suit in their collaborations with young artists, uplifting the next generation of innovators in fashion.
