J.Lauryn: Meet the rhythmic reggae artist who has written songs for Post Malone, BTS, BlackPink, and Ziggy Marley.
Having been the go-to songwriter for some of the biggest stars in the world, Hawaii-born music artist J.Lauryn is finally coming complete with her tracks. ‘Who The Man’ is a flawless example of her unique ‘rhythmic reggae’ style.
In early 2024, singer-songwriter J.Lauryn is set to release her long-awaited new album to the world.
The artist, born in Hawaii but who has made her career in Los Angeles over the last 17 years, is revered within songwriting circles because she has penned some of the biggest streaming hits of the previous decade.
After receiving her first songwriting placement in 2016 with reggae legend Ziggy Marley, J.Lauryn’s talents helped the artist win a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album the following year.
Since 2016, J.Lauryn has co-written hit songs for many of the biggest acts in the world, including Post Malone, BTS, Blackpink, Ty Dolla $ign, French Montana, Jessie J, and plenty of other significant artists. A noted hitmaker, she’s credited as an 8x RIAA Platinum-selling songwriter.
J.Lauryn has also maintained a burgeoning solo artist career during that time. In 2015, J performed her original song ‘Criminal Love,’ off her debut EP ViBeS & HiGhS, live on VH1's The Big Morning Buzz in Times Square. Two years later, she released her much-lauded debut album, Golden Year, which was self-produced, written, and engineered.
She has shared other singles throughout the last few years, even while she’s upped her game as a songwriter for the stars. In 2021, she collaborated with electronica group Cash Cash for their song ’42’ - taken from their Say It Like You Feel It album. The track currently has over 12 million streams on Spotify.
Since late 2023, J.Lauryn has been seriously plotting her course to being a solo star. She has recently been quoted saying she’s ready to “step into the light as an artist and out of the shadows as a songwriter.”
Since October 2023, J has dropped three singles, which reflect a new, more ambitious musical style than anything she’s attempted before. On tracks like ‘Bad To The Bone’ and ‘Pretty Hi,’ she offers listeners a wide-ranging style that reflects just how many significant artists she’s written and produced for in the past; these songs combine hip-hop, electronica, reggaeton, pop, and R&B - all to create a sound which J herself called ‘rhythmic reggae.’ The songs are indebted to J.Lauryn’s island roots and the reggae music she grew up with.
J’s latest single, ‘Who The Man,’ was released in January 2024, and it feels like it perfectly sets the tone for the year ahead. The song is a popping proclamation about J’s success story - delivered in quickfire rap verses.
Having spent so long enjoying success in the background of the music industry, J.Lauryn has started strong as she transitions to the foreground.
Her album is due in early 2024 - expect it to land with a bang.
