At the very first few moments of "Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts" I was fooled into thinking it was going to be an ethereal Britpop sound all the way through. I could almost hear gray, rainy Britain, but as soon as the bright, melodic -and clearly American- voice of Jessica Reilly came up, the skies parted and there was a warm glow all about me in an instant.
Born in Baton Rouge and currently based in Boston, Reilly began her musical journey in earnest at age 11, when she started singing professionally with her band, cutting her teeth around the richly historied Baton Rouge-New Orleans-Memphis music circuit, with her biggest live performance (so far) taking place back in 2015 at the renowned New Orleans Jazz Festival. Today, Jessica is a student at the Berklee college of music, focusing on songwriting and the music business.
Jessica's first release was "bless your heart" in 2021 and it was a fairly interesting alternative electro-pop song with some slight baroque elements, meanwhile, "Drunk Words, Sober Thoughts" is an interesting and genuine exploration of pop-rock and also an exercise in bittersweetness. The music's all upbeat and cheerful but it takes some of that sunshine into contrast with themes of emotional uncertainty, disillusionment, and even hope. This track Can be taken several ways, but it seems to be more about holding on to a relationship where each side is on a slightly different wavelength, as the incredibly catchy hook of the song reveals.
Ultimately, what the song really represents is one of the many possibilities that unfold as this promising young artist discovers her sound, and we get to be right there with her in the process.
Jessica hopes to put out more music in the coming months, as well as continue her education in both music and production. She is also interested in promoting herself online through her social media, which has already gotten her noticed by the likes of fellow Berklee alum Charlie Puth. With her powerful vocals and southern rock influences, Jessica Reilly is poised and ready to take over the music world.
