The Jamaican patty is descended from the Cornish pasty — a small meat pie brought across the Atlantic by English sailors in the 17th century. Its uniquely fiery character comes from the inclusion of Indian and African spices that traveled across the ocean, too. But how far would customers travel to enjoy a signature treat from Juici Patties?
For those unfamiliar, Juici Patties is Jamaica’s largest restaurant chain. Its signature dish is the Jamaican patty — a spicy, savory blend of meat or vegetables wrapped in a golden pastry shell.
Daniel Chin, son of founder Jukie Chin and CEO of the company’s United States division, has now brought the company stateside, opening several locations in Florida. It’s a big move for Juici Patties, but it’s just the beginning of the brand’s international expansion. “We eventually want to get to every state in the U.S.,” Chin says.
But where will Juici go next? A recent post on a Juici Patties social media page features customers’ love of patties — as well as a hint at future expansion plans.
Digital content creator Jermaine Scott-Brandon Watson recently stood outside a Juici Patties location and asked customers just how far they’d travel to grab one (or several) of the brand’s now-famous patties.
“Oh, trust me, wherever you guys are, I’ll find it,” said one woman with a laugh. “Miles!” exclaimed a young man as he held up two paper bags filled with fresh Juici Patties fare.
Fans of the brand from all over the world joined in the fun in the comments. “I come all the way from Australia for Juici Patties and coco bread,” wrote user egyptianqueen. “I'm coming in February from Michigan,” said user zawjawear.
Customers and customers-to-be may be willing to travel, but the brand itself might be coming closer to them, too. Juici Patties hinted at future expansion in the video caption. “BIG news coming soon — get ready to find us in new places! Stay tuned,” it read in part.
If comments on the video are any indication, Juici Patties fans have their fingers crossed for a New York City location. “Come to NYC,” said one commenter. “Quit playing and put some in NEW YORK too!!” wrote another.
“Our main items have been there from day one, but we do add some additions to the menu,” Chin says. “We try things and keep the most popular items. So we're striking the balance between maintaining the authentic flavors we've had over more than four decades but also still working on innovating and bringing some variety to the menu.”
It remains to be seen where — and when — Juici Patties will open its next location. However, one thing is clear — as the restaurant expands, so does its fan base of new and long-time customers.
