Kim Shui showcased her Autumn/Winter 2023 collection on Feb. 12th, 2023, at New York Fashion Week. This season, Kim Shui takes her ongoing unabashed celebration of the female form to the table for an intersectional dialogue on what it means to live and express oneself freely through dress. Though her new collection speaks to current moments of upheaval, it was created to send a message to future generations, and to help move toward a world that prioritizes identity and self-definition. 

Shui integrates netting and crosshatching to cover and expose the body in shapes reminiscent of a chain-link fence. Shui also uses vegan snakeskin and fur that allude to protective layers found in nature, whereas clear snakeskin coats allude to shedding of the skin and a reclaiming of power. Sheer laces, meshes, and corset boning also evoke conventional interiors and what we wear underneath. Together, these elements work to reveal the ways in which women’s bodies and voices are veiled, and to turn those expectations inside out in a fierce portrayal of autonomy and freedom.
