The impending doom and anxiety of our inevitable death are fears that most of us mull over, some more than others. For Brendan Dyer, the principal songwriter and vocalist of alt-rock band MILLY, death is constantly on his mind. As Dyer explores this anxiety, he also finds ways to channel these sensations through his music. MILLY’s upcoming album, “Your Own Becoming,” encapsulates the experience of crippling anxiety and existential dread. The lead single of the album, “Drip from the Fountain,” was recently released with an accompanying music video, setting the stage for MILLY's reinvented sound. The song features an explosive chorus and airtight melodic hooks inspired by the early work of the iconic alternative rock band Death Cab for Cutie.
On this new track, Brendan Dyer shares, “This was the final song we wrote for the record. I'm trying to just soak in being a person and enjoying my time, especially observing as much as I can. The dark especially. 'Time is running out but this moment feels nice' is truly where my head was at.” The music video for “Drip From the Fountain” uses camcorder-like footage and takes place in an airport with small hangar planes in view. The bandmates role-play as pilots, except for Dyer, who walks around the tarmac among the planes, singing his new tune in a classy suit. The small planes soon take flight, providing aerial shots from the sky to the beat of the surging guitar riffs.
MILLY’s full album is set to be released on June 28th, featuring 10 dark and galvanizing tracks. The album, and particularly this new single, are a testament to persisting in the face of anxiety and fear and leaning on loved ones and creativity to process this angst. While death may be upon all of us, Dyer shows that the most we can do is continue to create art and community with the precious time we have left.
