On September 30th, The Getty Center collaborated with The Autry Museum of the American West to host PST ART x The Autry: Fashioning Indigenous Futurism – an extension of the Autry Museum’s exhibit: Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art, Fashion, Technology.

The museum exhibit explores the rise of futurism in contemporary indigenous art, and how the featured artists use their pieces as an outlet for coping with colonial trauma while imagining alternate futures, and incorporating indigenous technologies to promote inclusivity and sustainability in the present and future.

Partnering with PST ART, a collaborative event throughout the Southern California region dedicated to creating opportunities for civic dialogue around some of the most urgent problems of our time, the show, which was curated by Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, gave indigenous artists Jason Baerg, Orlando Dugi, Jontay Kahm, Caroline Monnet and Jamie Okuma the opportunity to present their designs alongside a tailored soundscape from sound designer Mato Wayuhi, and an AR activation by Virgil Ortiz, culminating into an immersive fashion experience. “Each designer's work serves as a testament to the dynamic interplay between present, past and future, tradition and innovation," curator Amber-Dawn Bear Robe shares, "By showcasing these extraordinary artists, the Fashioning Indigenous Futurism Runway Show underscores the critical role of Indigenous fashion in shaping a future that is both deeply informed by heritage and radically innovative.”

The fusion of each artist’s interpretation of Indigenous identity alongside their extensive knowledge of cutting-edge design and craftsmanship resulted in an experience promoting many of the same themes present in the Future Imaginaries: Indigenous Art, Fashion, Technology exhibit at the Autry.
