Massachusetts artist Sycklone uses his 2023 single ‘The Weekend’ to delve into the messy elements of a relationship gone sour - as well as to show his songwriting prowess

Everett City singer Sycklone’s recent single, ‘The Weekend, ’ offers a glimpse into a different side of the singer/songwriter/rapper.

The artist has released two albums to date - including the debut album Self Made and second album On A Wave - has had a fruitful 2023. In the last few months, he’s shared as many as six tracks from his upcoming project, The Green Files, which he began working on during lockdown.

‘The Weekend’ sees Sycklone explore how relationships can tie individuals up in knots, causing unnecessary problems. It gives a taster into how complex a songwriter, Sycklone, is. What strikes you most about this particular track is how, even with his sumptuously laidback voice, Sycklone always seems completely in command of his music. Take, for example, the guitar riffs on the song; they’re mixed into the track in such a subtle way that they complement the lyrics and the song’s overall theme about on/off relationship problems. Sycklone here gives us a taster of an acoustic-rock love song without ever fully committing to it or moving away from his rap foundations. Ultimately, he mulls over the pain of a relationship before deciding to remove himself from the psychodrama of it; he’s “gone for the weekend” - and he’s happy enough with that.

This song demands repeated listens.
