This December, Art Basel premieres the third edition of the Art Basel Shop, a concept store featuring a curated selection of lifestyle and heritage items that bring life to the essence of Art Basel. Being the largest installment of Art Basel Shop to date, the event features book signings, artist meet-and-greets, and activations, as well as custom furniture from Swiss heritage company, USM spanning over 2000 feet of the Miami Beach Convention Center. The space occupies the MBCC’s West Lobby, Grand Ballroom, and East Lobby, making it the most expansive and visible it has ever been. With heirlooms and collectibles about, the shop is an amalgamation of timeless craftsmanship and contemporary artistry, offering visitors an elevated journey into the art world.
This third running of the Art Basel Shop is prepared by Sarah Andelman, a Parisian creative perfect for the task of bringing Art Basel into the retail space, as the co-founder and creative director of Parisian concept store, Colette. Andelman excels in wrapping identity and modernity into this project.
Brazilian artist, Paulo Nimer Pjota creates the AB by Artist line this year in hues of pink and mint green. It features three tie-dye t-shirts, two hats, one tote bag, and a notebook unique in its portrait of mythical creatures and forest-like backdrop. His designs, poetic and evocative, are also whimsical and trendy. This aligns well with Nimer Pjota’s philosophy to bridge a historical style with pop culture into items that can be used in everyday life, but double as artwork.
The revamping of the AB by Art Basel Heritage line witnesses a bold reclaiming of the 1994 Art Basel catalog cover logo. The icon spells the word “party,” a noun brilliantly mimicked by the playful nature of its design. To further encapsulate the free spirit and jovial attempt at Art Basel Miami Beach, the line includes a deck of playing cards, golf balls, a beach towel, and a windshield sun shade. All items that vivaciously remind the user of their space and time, and of the energetic pulse of Miami.
The line presents hand-painted Christmas ornaments brought to life by British painters, Kaye Donachie and Sola Olulode, and by House of Voltaire. Additionally, the Art Basel shop includes a series of posters presented by Iconic Moments and crafted by Tyler Hobbs, a digital artist known for his work on computational aesthetics. Included is a feature of Italian artist Paola Pavi’s sunglasses, which were produced by Lizworks. These act as a vital component of “Seeing The World Through Artists’ Eyes”, a project put forth by the pair. Art Basel Shop also sees work from Kenny Scharf, an American artist known for his focus on surrealist street art with a cartoonish appearance.
