Nothing can truly last forever, or can it? It seems like LA-trio, untitled(halo), is making a valiant attempt with their newest release “That’s Honey,” preserving a singular moment and hoping it might endure the beyond.
Together (halo) members Ari, Jack, and Jay return after their debut EP towncryer, with “That’s Honey,” constructing a thick barrier of melancholic discord, finely tuned to the transient nature of fleeting moments and the spaces in between. The result is a soundscape both grounded in the present and yet grasping for something just out of reach.
Produced by fellow nascent LA musician, urika’s bedroom, the track weaves in and out of nostalgia and bittersweet reverie. Ari reflects, "I remember sitting in his room and freestyling the lines about playing basketball in the sky. These lines were naturally taken from me watching the film Lilya 4-ever the night before. A very emotional but beautiful film, which I think are feelings (halo) tends to take on.” Jay shares, “Before Tchad (urika’s bedroom) laid out the drums for this, we shared a bowl of blueberries and honey,” which makes sense with the syrupy sweet sentiments.
The tenderness in the lyrics renders a scene of serene yet poignant intimacy, as Ari sings: “With you I’ll play in the sky / We’ll ball, we’ll fly so high / Like angels in the sky.” There is this boundless freedom and joyous abandon that's juxtaposed with the underlying vulnerability of reaching such sublime heights. The ethereal imagery is complemented by the gentle, almost wistful tone of the melody.
The visualizer for “That’s Honey” was directed by Ari, who shares, “The video stars our friends Ankha and Adali, who are real life best friends, and after we made this song I remember thinking how I wanted to capture their genuine friendship via playing basketball together on a summer afternoon, while also paying homage to Lilya. It was special to make this one with my bandmate Jack,” she continues, “We both and the whole band care so much about our visual presence, and film in general, so it was sweet to collaborate and make this music video an extension of us." Jack adds, “The whole process from the song to video just felt really seamless. all of our lyrics were from the heart and whatever emotions we captured in the video were genuine.”
