Despite the numerous contributions by female artists throughout history, there remains a significant disparity in terms of recognition and opportunities—a scenario familiar to many entrepreneurs across various industries.

While the art world is undeniably a space of creativity and freedom, it does share common entrepreneurial hurdles, such as breaking into competitive markets, ensuring you don’t get squeezed out of opportunities,  and establishing a unique brand.

Rashelle Stetman, a prominent fine artist and entrepreneur, has faced these challenges first-hand. Throughout her 10-year-long career in fine art, she has had to prove her mettle over and over again in her quest to forge her own path—on her own terms.

Her journey in art began as a child, seeking refuge in art from a turbulent family life. For her, art was a form of therapy, expression, and communication in a confusing, chaotic world.

Growing up, as she watched others figure out their career paths, Rashelle began to notice a pattern: join a family business, graduate college and get swallowed up in the corporate grind, or even aspire to athletic stardom - something Rashelle, a talented ice hockey player, even considered once.

But, none of these spoke to her on a deeper level. Ever curious and endlessly creative, Rashelle decided to turn to a world where she felt she belonged: art. But the path to success in this field was treacherous, filled with obstacles, doubt, and scrutiny.

“I was frequently discouraged from pursuing art for a living because it was deemed an unstable career path,” she reveals. “I think this is a bit more pronounced for women since whenever we dare to go against the grain and choose to put our careers first, it’s considered a huge mistake.”

But, artistic talent in Rashelle was unyielding. Just as pronounced was her deep-seated desire for self-exploration, a connection with the world, and a celebration of freedom through creativity. And so, for her, the only path to go forward was to seek success in what resonated with her values—a sentiment shared among most entrepreneurs.

“Blending in was never an option. I knew who I was and what I wanted to do, and I was ready to challenge any norm to realize my dream.”

Still, Rashelle admits that a career in fine art wasn’t without its own challenges. Along the way, she was met with doubt, at times, from peers who were threatened by her presence in the industry. She also shouldered the burden of the industry’s expectations and constraints, from which she fought hard to free herself.

“The industry will try to dictate how you should think, act, or create,” Rashelle shares. “But I refuse to be pigeonholed into any box or category. The lack of support I’ve sometimes encountered has never deterred me from pursuing my goals.”

In her dual role as an artist and entrepreneur, Rashelle has made significant strides, gaining recognition for her fine art and commissioned work. Her pieces are as diverse as they’re captivating. From the intricate details that breathe life into her sketches to the bold strokes and the use of colors that range from soft pastels to electric hues, each piece radiates a deep emotional intensity.

Now, her work is sought by many high-profile clients, from celebrities to professional athletes and renowned brands. She has also been published in “Drawn: Leaders in Contemporary Illustration” amongst various other publications throughout her career.

Reflecting on the road so far, Rashelle emphasizes the importance of staying true to one’s vision. Her unyielding commitment to her craft is a shining example of what happens when one is bold enough to pursue one’s dreams, regardless of the roadblocks that may lie waiting.

Uncompromisingly ambitious, with clear goals in sight, she’s prepared to push boundaries further and hopes to inspire other entrepreneurs, women and men alike, to seek what speaks to their hearts and to remain steadfast in their vision.

As she says, “I hope my story can resonate with people, spark conversations, and inspire others to see the world in a more promising light.”
