Back in January of this year, KEXP uploaded a 25-minute Youtube video that showcased a complete, live performance from Black Midi, an unknown band from the UK playing a combination of post-punk, math-rock, with a little experimental thrown in. When viewers, excited by what they were seeing and hearing, searched the internet for more information about the lads they found nothing. Since its time of inception on Youtube, the video has racked up over 650,000 views.
What surprised people the most was how much youth and vitality seemed prevalent in the quartet. It looked as if the footage was captured at a high-school’s Battle of The Bands contest. In the ensuing months, more details leaked about the band; yes, they were all recent high-school grads (none of them older than 21), and they met while attending BRIT school, an institute known for alumni such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).
Riding high on UK’s notorious hype wave, Black Midi released their debut album _Schlagenheim,_ and have since embarked on their first US tour. While in Los Angeles they are booked for a three-night, sold-out stint at Frogtown’s prized club Zebulon, courtesy of Sid the Cat.
Since the band isn’t legally permitted to drink yet, Zebulon opened its doors for a rare all-ages performance. The audience appeared as a healthy mix of teenagers excited about a band near their age, twenty to thirty-year-olds curious about their escalating hype train, and middle-aged parents accompanying their underage child,
The wonderful Drum and Lace set the tone early with an angelic, ethereal set which saw the performer take the stage alone, accompanied by her sampler and a projector which delivered a steady stream of psychedelic images.

Black Midi, led by singer and guitarist Geordie Greep, took the stage for a crowd ready to rage. As soon as the excellent Morgan Simpson drummed out the first beat, the audience broke into a ferocious mosh pit.

The band ripped through most of their debut record as well as their first single “Talking Heads.” They interlaced complete noise breakdowns with their actual songs creating the illusion of one long, continuous jam session. Highlights include the bassist Cameron Picton’s spoken word performance of “7-11”, and a coked-out version of “Bmbmbm.”
