The renowned New York based contemporary art gallery, [Fort Gansevoort](http://www.fortgansevoort.com), will open its doors to its Los Angeles location this Saturday. The first exhibition to be housed in the new gallery on Fountain Ave will be _Drapetomania_, a work by critically acclaimed author and playwright [Christopher Myers](https://www.kalyban.com). He will bring together textile and sculptural works, taking the idea of freedom and its intrinsic link to bondage into consideration. Playing off of the debunked theory of Samuel Cartwright that described a form of mania that caused slaves attempt to escape. After having visited juvenile detention centers for 15 years, Myers has been thinking about the modern sense of liberty and how this myth lives in the shadow of slavery, from displacement to colonialism, gender oppression to incarceration.  Courtesy of the artist and Fort Gansevoort. ![Courtesy of the artist and Fort Gansevoort.](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bbafd948f9c3d49cb150_Flaunt-Fort-Gansevoort-4.jpeg) Courtesy of the artist and Fort Gansevoort. The exhibition will feature mural-like textile pieces, engulfing viewers into the dialogue he is calling to. One of the highlights of the exhibition will be ‘Every Temporary Hero,’ a textile work depicting the surge in removing Confederate monuments in the United States as a global phenomenon. As one of the first exhibitions in this new space, Myers will bring together all of what inspires his work, from his time researching and writing to the references to history, films, novels, and myths. With an opening reception on Saturday, December 14 from 6 to 8 pm, Fort Gansevoort Los Angeles will bring its commitment to research and excellent curation to a new city. * * * _Drapetomania_ will be on view until February 8, 2020 at Fort Gansevoort Los Angeles | 4859 Fountain Avenue Images courtesy of the artist and Fort Gansevoort
