The singer-songwriter is a frontrunner for Latin music, reeling in influences from the top American artists such as Usher and Chris Brown to create his own unique blend of that feel-good Reggaeton and R&B that is unmatched. Beyond the incredible music he creates, it’s his personality, good looks, and undeniable live performances that fans cannot get enough of. Boasting an extremely respected international presence, which includes over 3.2 million followers on Instagram and over 5.5 million subscribers on Youtube, Dalex went from recording as part of the duo Jayma y Dalex to solidifying his name as a solo artist in just a few years. Stemming off the success of last year’s “[Mejor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTV7O6eCDZk)” featuring Sech, which hails over 54 million views on Youtube and counting, Dalex returns with even greater hits: “Máquina del Tiempo,” “Feeling,” “XLEY” featuring Trey Songz, and most recently, “PA’NAMA.” All these records can be found on his newest album titled _Unisex_. Flaunt caught up with Dalex via Zoom, who was finishing his album in Miami just one day prior to shooting his video with Daddy Yankee. Read below as we discuss his collaboration with Daddy Yankee, his sound, not knowing “Mejor” would be big, naming his album _Unisex_, love for fashion, working with Trey Songz, favorite songs off the project, the meaning behind “Pa’nama,” dream collabs, and more! **You’re shooting a video with Daddy Yankee, how’d that happen?** I'm super excited. His manager sent me a song that Daddy Yankee wanted me to jump on. I recorded it 5 minutes after he sent it to me. That’s really important to me so I did that fast, I didn't want to lose the opportunity.  **How was it hearing the end product with both of you guys on it?** Honestly, I haven't listened to the finished song with him and me together. I can't wait to hear it tomorrow at the video shoot. I'm super excited because of the video, also because I really want to hear the song with our voices together. **How would you describe your own sound?** I was raised in Puerto Rico so we listen to Reggaeton every day since we wake up in the morning. When I was 12, I moved to Pennsylvania. I remember I started watching the BET channel, I used to watch all the videos. I started listening to Chris Brown, Usher, all of them. When I listened to their music, I loved it. The R&B, I started looking more for that kind of music. I fell in love with R&B. When I came back to Puerto Rico, I kept listening to R&B. Obviously, they’re Reggaeton. When I started making music, without planning it I started making a mix of Reggaeton and R&B. There's not a name for that. \[laughs\] **Did you think "Mejor" would blow up the way that it did?** I was working on my EP _Modo Avión_ and I did that song with Sech. When we did it, we felt it was a really great song. Sometimes I do a song and I feel like it's going to be a really big song, and nothing happens. Maybe another song that you don't think is going to be really big, is the one that blows up. That happened to me. The first song that got people to know me, when we dropped it, I didn't know that song was going to be that big.  I dropped it to have more content out, it turns out that song is one of my biggest songs. When we did the song, we felt it was going to be big. But at the end of the day, the song was good but we didn't anticipate it blowing up the way it did. Because fans and the public are so iffy that you never really know which songs they're going to like. We didn't think that fans were going to blow this one up, and boom! That's the one that ended up being one of my biggest hits. It's all on the fans. They're unpredictable, you never know what they’ll pick. **What are you most excited for with _Unisex_?** I'm super excited about this album because I have some collaborations from people I grew up listening to, that I never thought I’d be making music with them. Like Wisin & Yandel, Zion & Lennox, Trey Songz, that's a dream come true. Other than that, I'm bringing some new styles of music for me. I love to do R&B with Reggaeton. On this album, I still got R&B because that's my essence so I can’t lose that, but I have more uptempo house music. House music, I have dancehall, I have techno. More uptempo music so people can dance and have fun. **What did you name it _Unisex_?** I named it Unisex because this album is for everybody. It’s music for everybody to have fun. Other than that, fashion too. I love fashion. I wear girls’ clothes, I say girls’ clothes because that's what they call it. With clothes, you can wear whatever you want. It shouldn’t have labels. If you're a man and you want to put on a skirt because that's what makes you feel happy and comfortable, you can do it.  **How would you describe your fashion sense?** Oh man, it's hard because sometimes I wanna dress more like a rapper. You know diamond chains, big clothes, Jordans, Air Forces, hats. But sometimes, I want to dress more like a rockstar. Or sometimes, I want to put on a girl jacket. It's hard for me to describe my style of fashion. I'm a quiet and shy person, so the way I talk to people is the way I dress. > [ > > View this post on Instagram > > ](https://www.instagram.com/p/CVD3J6NL6tR/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) > > [A post shared by Dalex 👽 (@dalexmusic)](https://www.instagram.com/p/CVD3J6NL6tR/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) **How'd it feel to reveal the tracklist?** Man, I wanted to reveal the album a long time ago. I was super excited to let people know the songs that are coming with the features. I wanted to drop the album already but I feel happy that at least people know the features that are coming and how many songs will be on the album. It's going to be 18 songs. I wanted to put more because we've been recording the whole year, everyday. I got 10 more albums. I collected the songs that I thought were the best for this moment, and we put them together.  **How was it linking with Trey Songz?** I linked with Trey Songz because of my road manager at that time. He now works with Rich Music, my record label. He used to work in the American market a long time ago so he knows Cool & Dre. They're big producers who worked with Chris Brown, Trey Songz, DJ Khaled, all these people. My style is R&B so he kept talking to these guys Cool & Dre. He told them, "Yo I got this kid, he can sing R&B but in Spanish." He kept talking to them about me. One day, they said "Okay, let me listen to this guy's music. He’s talking so much, let’s see if he's as good as you say." When he showed them my music, they loved it. They showed it to Trey Songz and he loved it, he was really humble to jump on the song. He's a superstar, he’s a legend. I've just started in the music business so I'm really grateful to Trey Songz and Cool & Dre for giving me the opportunity to collab with them. They’re legends, I feel really grateful. **How long have you been doing music?** I've been making music for a long time, but it's been a short time since people have known me. I've been making music for 10 years. My process wasn't really fast, but it happened. That's the important part, we made it and I’m really happy. It was 2 years ago that people started to know me. That's a really short time, but I’ve been trying since 10 years ago. **What inspired “Pa’nama”?** When I did that song, we were in the Dominican Republic. I was in a camp, there were a couple songwriters and producers from Panama. For some reason, I work a lot with Panamanian musicians. They're super talented, so almost all of my producers are from Panama. We're talking about a lot of stuff: the way they talk, the way they are, all this stuff. One of the guys said, “Yo bro, we should make a song talking about Panama.”  At first, I said, "Nah, I love Panama but I'm not from there." At first, I thought the idea was a little bit corny. Me from Puerto Rico singing about another place? But then we gave it a try. It turns we used the name Panama, but we used it as a double entendre. We used the name Panama, but we're not talking about the country. We're talking about other stuff. People from there feel attached to the song because you're mentioning their country. It was really dope. The reason we came up with the song was because of the country, but we're not talking about the country in the song.  **Best memory from shooting the video?** The best memory, wow. It was the shot of when I was driving the car. We were having fun driving around with the big camera on the car. This big camera was outside the car, but it was looking through the window. We were having fun because of that. The people from the neighborhood and houses were all looking like “who is this guy? What’s he doing?” That’s the best part of it, to watch people to enjoy what you're doing behind-the-scenes. Everybody watches the video when it's out and edited, but there's not a lot of people who get to see behind-the-scenes. Those people from the neighborhoods got to see behind-the-scenes while we’re shooting. **Favorite song off the album and why?** Oh wow, that’s a tough question because I love all the songs. Literally. If I had to choose just one, oh my god that’s hard. Can I choose 3? My Top 3 are "Máquina del Tiempo,” "Favorita,” and "Llora.”  **Why those?** "Maquina del Tiempo" I love because me and Rauw Alejandro knew each other since before we blew up. Now, he’s a superstar. A lot of people know us. It's more sentimental because after all that, now we get to still make music. It's good that we stick together. The other guy Lyanno too, we all started before blowing up together. It's a blessing to still be doing music with them. Other than that, the beat. I love the beat, the beat’s super dope. It's The Weeknd vibes, but in Spanish.  And "Llora" is R&B, I love the sound. I did it with Poo Bear. He's one of the greatest songwriters ever, so it's a blessing for me to work with him. The other one "Favorita," I did the song with some guys from Puerto Rico called Favela, they're my wife's favorite group. They sing more romantic ballads. We did a song and it came out really great, I love it. My wife and I listen to their music a lot so it's special. **Anyone you want to collaborate with, that you haven’t yet?** I’d love to work with Chris Brown, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny, Post Malone. There's a lot of people I’d love to work with.  **One thing that you want people to take from the album?** To have fun with the music. When people listen to my music. I want them to feel happy and to have fun. They can be whoever they want to be, and inspired them to fight for their dreams. If you have goals, go for them. I had a goal before I started making this album, and I finished it. I want them to feel the same: go for it. You can finish it.
