While this is excellent in principle, what is not so amazing is when a significant part of the country is not kept current on the treatments they are receiving. Dr. Sanjay Juneja is an oncologist who has taken to social media in an attempt to bridge this gap until a more effective means of communicating and staying up to date with community oncologists and patients becomes more widely available and adopted. With over half a million followers across his social media platforms, Dr. Juneja has learned to almost tantalize viewers into the appeal of viral sounds and trends after which many are left more knowledgeable about a particular scope of cancer. Due to his vast knowledge and social media reach, it is probably not surprising to know that Dr. Juneja caught the attention of the White House itself, where he now participates on the Healthcare Leaders of Social Media Roundtable alongside Dr. Mike and other prominent media personality physicians in the interest of optimizing healthcare access and equity for citizens across the country. In one of his more recent Instagram Reels, he informed viewers of the actions of the White House that now qualify Americans with high cost medical bills to obtain mortgages where the amount of their medical debt does not count toward their credit score or obtaining an FHA-or-equivalent loan. In efforts to improve quality care and access to any American facing a cancer diagnosis, Dr. Juneja serves as a medical advisor for Xcures—a free service to cancer patients where they can have their information uploaded from their local oncologist and receive an entire summary of their scans, their cancer type and more novel mutations, as well as the up-to-second standard of care treatments in their specific disease as well as all of the investigational and trial therapeutics that could very effectively treat their cancer but are yet to have approval. On Dr. Juneja’s podcast Target: Cancer, he has world leaders in the oncology space and offers very raw, unapologetic information about the wins and woes of where we are with cancer. Specifically, he had a very emotional episode with Hollywood’s Cody Christian highlighting the need for higher priority on mental health amongst not just the patient but also the caretakers and family members who go through the challenging process alongside them. Social media offers several interesting talents and expressions in all industries, but bettering cancer care and conceivably the life of those with that tall challenge as well as their family members, is one that caught many by surprise.
