In light of Latino Heritage Month, LA musician, [MONOGEM](https://www.instagram.com/monogem/), painted a picture of pride through her psychedelic-pop anthem, “Soy Lo Que Soy.” Although the beats of the track are fresh and modern, the lyrics are roots to her Guadalajaran heritage which have now blossomed into self expression and self love. “The song describes the feeling of change…almost a catharsis. The writing process of ‘Soy Lo Que Soy’ was emotional and informative, but above all, has made me realize that I only am what I am, and always will be,” the musical mastermind made known.
While gearing up for the release of her upcoming album, _So Many Ways_ out just next month, MONOGEM wanted to make her art reflective of her own truth while playing into a promise she once made with her abuela. MONOGEM not only made sure she never lost sight of her heritage, she also made “Soy Lo Que Soy” as an exclamation of achievement in being 100% herself. “For me, it’s an honor to write music in Spanish…a language that was such an integral part of my upbringing. This song is for my abuelita as much as it is for me."
Channel the experimental Rosalía-esque energy right here and be on the look out for MONOGEM’s next move. Let this serve as a wake up call for all of us to blurt out, “I am what I am!” whenever we can.
