The Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence, Italy, currently presents _SETA_, an exhibition curated by Judith Clark and Stefania Ricci, that narrates the story of printed silk by Salvatore Ferragamo. The exhibition is currently virtually open, with the hopes of opening in person once the museum reopens, and will run until April 2022.
Honoring the late Fulvia Ferragamo Visconti, whose passion for silk allowed for the material to become a sign of great distinction for the Ferragamo brand, the exhibition celebrates her creativity in the field of silk, telling the story of the company’s silk accessories since the 1970s.
From the Roman Empire, through Medieval times, to the West in Persia and China, silk weaved the stories of the world. Connecting East and West, serving as a tool for trade and civilization, silk signified all that is regal, elegant, and luxurious. Its origin, one of the world’s most fascinating mysteries: Lepidoptera larvae secrete a strand of fibre, which through an extraordinary creative process is transformed into the most beautiful of fabrics.
By drawing on the abundant archives of Salvatore Ferragamo, this exhibition aims to illustrate the long creative process behind the silk prints that so famously earned a name to the Ferragamo family. In the late 1950s, dreaming of transforming his internationally renowned brand into a fashion label, Salvatore began producing the first silk scarves. The rest is history.
