The one-of-a-kind project serves as an initiative to “empower independent artists and amplify them and their intellectual properties in non-restrictive, non-exclusive ways,” states Chicquelo Smith, Founder/Creative Director and James W. Lee III, VP of extratwopercentRECORDS**.**
When it comes to the music industry, many artists may fall victim to losing the ability to own their masters or royalties. This idea was created solely to give up and coming artists the opportunity to accelerate their growth and exposure royalty-free, without compromising control of their own music and profits. Funded by Cash App and Distributed by United Masters, the project is being released with a limited edition Nike Air Force 1, in addition to the official EP merch—giving [audiences a chance to support this groundbreaking initiative.](https://extratwopercent.com/)

**How would you guys describe yourselves?**
**Delly:** I’m jiggy. I’m handsome. I‘m what’s new and I’m what’s now. I’m the best version of myself everyday. The music we made was definitely dope because everybody had the most room to honestly express themselves, really put out to the world who they were. Whether that be a reestablishing of a brand or becoming one, everybody really was able to hone in on exactly what it is they wanted to show the world. Even though Odalys is rapping in my song, she really broke out of her shell. Everybody really had fun, the project really will reflect that for sure.
**Odalys:** I definitely see myself as a limitless person, forever learning. There’s not one thing I can learn everyday. Whether it’s engineering, whether it’s producing, whether it’s learning how to make clothes, whatever I want to do, I’ll get straight to it and I will.
**You guys are signed to extratwopercentRECORDS, how did the partnership with Cashapp come about?**
**Odalys:** Honestly, thanks to Quelo and him having a major team. People like Glyn Brown who approached me and honestly told me he wanted me to be one of the only females really to be a part of extratwopercent right now. Also for Quelo believing in me and putting the battery on it, inviting me over to Miami where we got to record. I got to get with everybody, we vibed out and had a great time. It's amazing that Cashapp being a verified company is backing up artists and believing in people like Quelo and extratwopercentRECORDS to be able to let us express ourselves and produce.
**Delly:** Yeah, I got hip to the situation the way Odalys do. Glyn, everybody else I met in Miami for the first time, it was a dope experience. It’s dope that extratwopercentRECORDS is paving the way for artists to get funding from different companies, allow for young, brown, native people to establish themselves in the music industry outside of the major labels. Being able to express our cultural powers is definitely dope, I’m glad to be a part of it.

**What was the process like working together?**
**Swoosh:** Personally, I loved the whole experience. The whole trip because I’ve known Odalys since about 2014, 2015. Every time we been hanging out, there’s special moments. Even from the parties they threw on their own time, bringing out the whole New York as kids. Glyn introduced me and Delly, me and Yas know each other. It felt like a sleep away camp. You get away, you’re with your friends and your peers in the summer. Hanging out for the weekend, I loved it for real. The songs that came about were fire. Me and Delly made a vibe. Me and Yas made a vibe. The “No Rest” video came out unexpectedly crazy. That shit was fire. I loved Miami.
**Odalys:** We definitely had a great time. Shout out to Chicquelo and James.
**Delly:** Swoosh answer did it for me, that shit made me smile and laugh.
**Odalys:** You said it all.
**Swoosh:** Especially with quarantine. We’re quarantining and got to go to Miami with our friends, that’s what it is for me. I’m even more blessed to be a part of this compilation project because quarantine and Covid for artists is a different experience I never thought I’d come across to see this. To stay busy and have music to put out, it’s a blessing to me. That’s all that really matters to me, everything else is a bonus.
**I know the title pays homage to independent artists. What does it mean to have all your royalties?**
**Swoosh:** It means a lot because going through industry situations and seeing where we fall, hearing stories of having to deal with. Seeing what it’s like to have a deal, it’s not what everybody turns out to be. Some people can’t even handle certain things when they get to a certain situation. All artists should have this because art is a trying experience. Even when you get to a great status, you’re still trying. Sometimes you trying can fall on other people, then they want to put the pressure on you because they’re investing this amount of money. “I’m telling these people about you, so…” You can’t even be a true artist like “alright man, I’m want to put this out.” For instance, if Delly goes up crazy and he has all these people subscribing to his merch and going through their port, people will take your hard work and put that in another person’s wallet. Now if you have your own way where you can contact them directly, that’s great. It’s lit.
**Odalys:** Honestly, it’s a blessing because I’m not an artist doing most of their royalties. To be honest to have all my real fees, it’s always going to be a blessing.
**Delly:** That’s what makes the beauty of music being timeless, because you never know. If you can kiss the latest song, the same way vintage songs are going viral on TikTok now, the artist can get paid. Not a lot of people get that pleasure or that blessing.
**Swoosh:** Personally, of course having your masters and all that is beautiful, but it’s well-deserved as well. To this point, at least speaking from myself, I’ve done everything from song creation to executive production, creative direction for my videos to marketing and meeting scheduling to my own calendars. Doing everything to the point where why the hell would I pay anybody else to do anything for me when I’m already doing it for myself? I love business models like this because it shows how amazing it pays those who do work hard. I’m glad to be a part of that. It’s progression, it’s the new age. It’s the new wave of being an independent artist, partnering with tech companies where you don’t necessarily have to sign away all the time. People can see the business opportunity in making money together.

**How important is black ownership?**
**Delly:** 1000% important. Most important thing that’s happening in American history because hip hop music is the #1 genre, the #1 influence around the world. The fact that hip-hop was created in the brown and black community, we have to own it. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t own it. It’s steps forward. It allows the world to keep the integrity of brown and native people and black ownership. Without all this work a lot of brown people put in, a lot of times we get the short end of the stick from the very start of this country. It’s very nice and refreshing to see a turn of the time. I’m happy to be a part of the be leaders and the four of us on this tape being on this tape to show young brown and native kids we’re the first to do it this way. Not only the first to do it, we did it wavy. We did it awesome, setting the bar at a really high standard. People can meet us there and do better.
**Swoosh:** I don’t want to use ‘brown’ because I’ve been reading a book recently and it’s about caste systems. Shirley, you work for _Flaunt_ company? Even you getting that far, that’s a big accomplishment. What they did to people outside of the caucasian cast, the upper level, everything’s supposed to be for them. A building of a house, the bottom of it is still mud. Everything’s still on top of the mud still, it’s the bottom. People like us are at the bottom of the caste system, everything stands on us. If you don’t got a strong mud system, you’re not going to have a good house. We the bottom, we the strong ones. We’re the ones that everything’s lying on us, this country, this world’s working off.
For it to be Black History month, it’s hitting different. Usually I’m dropping something, I’m being nonchalant but dropping something on Interscope versus dropping something now… bro. It’s less pressure. They say “it better do this” or “it better do that. We put all of this into this, we need get that.” You can just be free, freedom is something you can’t put a price on. It’s something you can’t really describe, crazy.
**You guys have a song called “outside.” How does it feel as a music artist in the age of Covid?**
**Odalys:** Honestly as an artist, Covid has been a little bit draining. As a DJ, what made me love it so much was the reaction from other people. I miss people, I miss interacting. I miss putting my art out there and watching people react to it. Honestly, it breaks my heart. It’s not the same standing online and trying to be there. You’re reading comments, but it’s not the same.
**Delly:** I’ve seen this happen a lot of times, people are nicer in person than the internet. I’ve been having people say the craziest things to me online, but in person they get the vibe. To see me onstage or see me in an area where we share the space, they see the type of person I really am. Being in person is different. Being around people, we’re human. Animals in the jungle with animals.
**Swoosh:** I personally like it. In my position in life, I think of myself as a leader. I move as a leader. Covid has given me a lot of space to live from afar and not be so involved, not feel like people are so entitled to my energy. I’ve been able to distance myself from a lot of exhausting relationships and re-evaluate them. This was a restart for me, whether that be a positive or negative based on mindset how I approach my day. Everyday, I try to approach it with the positive mind of this is the start of something brand new. I don’t really miss outside, the way it used to be. Especially 2019, early 2020, it was getting corny anyways. I’m glad we’re not going with the motion anymore, we’re not going through the day. The world’s waking up and moving a lot more, listening a lot more. Honestly, it’s the best for artists like me because that’s how I am as a person. I love intent-ful moves, but I like the fact that everyone in the world is feeling like this now. Everybody’s feeling like “yo I gotta get intent, motivation.” Everyone’s getting in tune with themselves and that’s the most beautiful thing to see.

**What do you like about cashapp?**
**Odalys:** What don’t we like about Cashapp? We use Cashapp everyday. It is the most convenient.
**Swoosh:** Mobile IOU’s. Send that, you don’t got cash? Send that.
**Odalys:** You feel me? There is no excuse. Everybody got Cashapp, c’mon.
**Delly:** Cashapp is dumb wavy because you can buy cryptocurrency. Yo, Swoosh I’ll text you some good links.
**Odalys:** Honestly to find out that they’re teaming up with people like extratwopercentrecords and letting us as artists express ourselves, it’s beautiful.
**Swoosh:** I had this problem previously. I could only imagine when outside do open up, certain shows when you get paid, it takes mad long. Cashapp gives you your payment right there. For me and my friends, Cashapp came in clutch for us so many times.
**What does it mean to also release with the new Air Force 1’s?**
**Delly:** It’s wavy, it’s classic. We drip in New York.
**Swoosh:** Plus, the icy blue is crazy.
**Odalys:** The shoe is beautiful, c’mon now.
**Delly:** Having the rollout together, the Nike sneakers with the music, that’s tough.
**Swoosh:** Facts, it’s a good release. It’s something to feel good about, especially coming through with classic New York swag with some classic New York people.
