The Lauren Iungerich-created series, which documents four South Los Angeles teenagers’ journey through the exciting, explorative, and oft-excruciating high school years, snaps an honest, heartfelt, and even humorous picture through a much-needed underrepresented lens. Characters Monsé Finnie, Cesar Diaz, Ruby Martinez Jr, Jamal Turner, and Jasmine Flores return for the third season to fanfare. Flaunt wonders what it means to work on a series that’s actively advocating less-amplified voices and diversity.
**With such a diverse community behind and in front of the camera, what does it mean to you to work on a show actively advocating for representation?**
Growing up, we didn’t see ourselves in movies or television, so we’re proud to be on a show like this and telling the story. I think, again, our show is rare. There are shows out there that I feel are diverse, but still not enough—still far and few in between.
**Season Two got very dark, what can we look forward to in the long awaited Season Three?**
It’s a rollercoaster.

**What is most misunderstood about South Los Angeles?**
Because you’re in any “project,” any area that’s considered “the hood,” which is debatable. I think just because you’re from there doesn’t mean you have to stay there, and doesn’t mean that you have to stay in that mindset and be engulfed.
**On a personal level, what motivates you?**
Fans, and them making us feel like we’re their voice—they have hope because of us, and it’s also educating a lot of the general public.
**Who’s your favorite artist you’re listening to right now?**
I’m into a lot of indie artists nowadays like Ari Lennox and H.E.R. I love old-school music, so I could go from an Ari Lennox song to a Sam Cooke song. We listen to a lot of R&B and a lot of Top 40 pop.
