 [The Los Angeles County Museum of Art](https://www.lacma.org/) presents [_Yoshitomo Nara_](https://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/yoshitomo-nara), the first international retrospective of artist Yoshitomo Nara, on view now through July 5, 2021. The show comprises more than 100 major works, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, and ceramics, as well as an installation that recreates his drawing studio, and never-before seen idea sketches. Featuring album covers that Nara collected as an adolescent, the show examines the artist’s work through the lens of music: his longtime passion. Exploring his roots in Asia; and modern art from Europe and Japan, _Yoshitomo Nara_ analyzes Nara’s live from childhood memories, music, and literature, to studying in Germany from 1988-2000. “Yoshitomo Nara is among the most important Japanese artists of his generation, and one of the most recognized artists working today. We are excited to be organizing this international Image captions page 7 retrospective,” said Michael Govan, LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director. “Nara’s art reflects his interest in art and culture of both past and present. His interest in art history—ranging from 12th-century Japanese Buddhist sculptures and handscroll paintings, Italian early-Renaissance painters, and other European modern influences—mirrors LACMA’s encyclopedic nature.” Dark but dreamy, Nara’s work invites us to a world of vaguely ominous-looking characters with penetrating gazes in dreamy landscapes.
