Brooklyn-based fragrance brand D.S. & DURGA opened their west coast flagship store on June 8, located on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach. Their third location in the United States, co-founder Kavi Moltz collaborated with Krista Ninivaggi to design the Southern California shop. Ninivaggi, principal & interior design leader of architectural practice Woods Bagot, worked with Moltz to craft a space that contrasted the Brooklyn store but retained the brand’s identity. Moltz, who studied architecture in Los Angeles, said the store incorporates the concrete edges and materials of the New York store but weaves in warmer woods and sandier tones to evoke a Californian feel.
Husband and wife David and Kavi Moltz founded D.S. & DURGA in 2008, with the pair wanting to turn what they loved — cowboys, landscapes, folk songs — into stories told through scent. David creates the brand’s scents, making them one of the few brands in the world to have an in-house perfumer. Kavi focuses on store design, aiming to construct buildings that augment the brand’s perfumes and presence.
Exclusive to the Los Angeles store is the Pacific Mythic, a candle available only in-store. As east coast natives, D.S. & DURGA wanted to put their own spin on the Californian ocean. With notes like avocado leaf, star jasmine, and magnolia, Pacific Mythic is what the brand calls “an east coast kid’s vision of Western waves.”
