Devastation continues to spread across the Los Angeles area due to the rampant fires stretching across the region. Many Angelenos have lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of this tragedy. As such, the J. Paul Getty Trust has created the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund in partnership with East West Bank and many more, like Mellon Foundation, the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The fund, which has amassed $12 million and continues to grow in response to continuous need, provides emergency relief for artists and art workers who have either lost their possessions or have been impacted by the fires in any way.
Starting on Monday, Jan. 20, individuals will be able to apply for an emergency grant. It is stated that urgency will be taken into significant consideration when distributing. The Center of Cultural Innovation, which is known for funding and advocacy within the arts, will manage the fund.
“People around the world are watching in horror as vast areas of Los Angeles burn, but this regional tragedy has global cultural repercussions,” says Katherine E. Fleming, President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. “Amid the losses suffered by the artists and arts workers who so strongly define LA, Getty is grateful to the many partners, local, national, and international, who have come together to meet the urgent needs of this community.”
Some of the donors include Karyn Kohl, Terri and Jerry Kohl, Kate Capshaw, and Steven Spielberg/The Heartland Foundation. Many organizations have begun fundraising for relief, like Art World Fire Relief LA GoFundMe campaign, the Craft Emergency Relief Fund, and the Motion Picture Television Fund.
