Isabelle Fuhrman is a woman of many facets. She has had her own production company since 2019, writes her own projects, is coming off a Tribeca Film Festival Best Actress win and also happens to run ultramarathons. While most known for her performance in The Novice, Ophan and The Hunger Games Fuhrman’s latest project is just as anticipated. Starring in Kevin Costner’s western epic HORIZON from Warner Bros/New Line, Fuhrman works opposite Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower and Luke Wilson. The film, a four part release, will have Part 1 released in theaters on June 28th.
Fuhrman had a long day of preparation before the premiere of her new film HORIZON at the Cannes Film Festival. We followed along to experience her day in the life before, during and after the big premiere.
Could you describe your personal style?
I’ve always loved fashion, and when it comes to my personal style, I love feminine elegant silhouettes, but I also like to add some edge and modernity.
What was your inspiration and intention for your Cannes look?
Cannes is the biggest red carpet, there’s nothing like it! The fashion is glamorous and extravagant, but it’s also steeped in rich cinema history.
I worked closely with my stylist, Alexandra Mandelkorn, on creating looks that would stand the test of time. We made mood boards and looked to Old Hollywood and even Princess Diana to show us the way. But we were also inspired by the Western genre of my film and wanted to bring some of that to my looks.
We felt that it was important to tell a story, especially for the premiere and the photo-call. I loved starting the day in a strong Western-style suit by Ralph Lauren and then changing into the show-stopping red Armani Privé ball gown for the red-carpet premiere. Both looks felt iconic in very different ways, but also tell the story of my character, Diamond, in Horizon. Diamond starts Chapter One and Two as a young woman who is raised to be in her masculine energy, but once she discovers her femininity, she realizes how powerful she actually is. My Armani Privé dress was feminine, romantic but also powerful and elegant.
What was your experience at Cannes like this year?
It was over the top exciting and so empowering to stand alongside all the women in the film and present it at Cannes. Our film premiered to a long-standing ovation. Kevin and all of us were so emotional and happy. It was a beautiful reception, and we were all very grateful.
I was in Cannes two years ago, but this was the first time I was here for my own movie premiere.
This year was incredible! From the moment I got off the plane, I went straight into glam to get ready for my first event. I wore a beautiful lavender Elie Saab gown that was inspired by the iconic Princess Diana pale blue dress she wore for her Cannes red carpet in 1987. My dress even had the same chiffon neck scarf. The next day I was up at 6 am to get in hair and makeup for a day of Horizon press- and then we had cast dinner. The day after 6am again in glam and then dressed for photo call and then the premiere. It was non-stop. It still feels surreal. It feels like a dream.
Can you walk us through your day - any funny or memorable moments?
One of my favorite moments was flying to Cannes with my dress, packed in a giant life-size box. I told the airline it was my wedding dress so they would take extra care of it… I felt like a princess in that dress!
I will always cherish the memory of wearing such a beautiful dress. I actually saw a video of it on the runway and sent it to Alexandra. “This is the dress!” I wrote and I feel so lucky I was able to wear it. It was the work of art, the detail and workmanship that went into making this dress is impressive.
What do you hope viewers took home with them after seeing the premiere of HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA CHAPTER 1?
I hope that Horizon Chapter 1, wets everyone’s appetite for the second chapter. The movie is deeply moving but the saga is really a journey! Chapter one is an introduction to the world that Kevin created and sets up the story for chapters 2-4. My character, Diamond is a woman ahead of her time and I am looking forward to everyone seeing her journey through these movies. She is one of my favorite characters I ever have gotten to play.
What was it like seeing their reactions in real time?
I was so happy when our film received such a long 11-minute standing ovation. It has been a dream of mine to have a movie premiere at Cannes and to stand in that theater with the applause while Kevin was tearing up - just made me very emotional. I know this movie means so much to Kevin. It means so much to me too!
