Fashion is in a constant state of flux and so is its relationship to legacy. While the notion of being scouted at the mall in a fly-over state as a prelude to stardom is still alive and well, familial influence feels more weighty season upon season. No one knows the weight of legacy better than Anna Cleveland, daughter of the pioneering, head-turningly gorgeous, and wildly effervescent 70s supermodel, Pat Cleveland. Legacy might as well have been in their genetic code.

Legend’s omnipresence can be both a gift and a challenge, of course, especially between mother and daughter, where identity and expectations blur maddeningly, beautifully. For Pat Cleveland, the thread of her legacy began with her own mother, Ladybird, a vibrant painter and costume designer who not only passed down her taste for beauty, but also introduced Pat to the world of design.

Pat’s star rose in 1973, after she walked in a legendary contest between American and French fashion designers known as the Battle of Versailles. She’s partied at Studio 54, slept on Karl Lagerfeld’s floor, been a muse to Salvador Dali, and carved out a space in the fashion industry all her own. She’s remembered by many as the star of countless runways—her signature a gestural flamboyance and elegance that is still challenging to describe today.

Then there’s Anna, a cultural force in her own right—having grown up in and around the fashion realm, (her first editorial shoot occurred at 2 years old), Anna Cleveland’s multitudinous brand relationships, runway appearances, and cover shoots mark the model’s unique legacy as a global tastemaker.

There is an endless fascination with mothers, and for good reason. Perhaps it’s the terrifying endurance of the bond or the stunning, choking power of generations knotted together. We are one another, plucked from the rib and created in her image—daughter made beautiful in senses far more cavernous and immaterial than physiognomy alone. Mothers are having a moment in the zeitgeist, too—though today’s conversation isn’t about “boy-moms” or “MomTok” or “tradwives.” Today, we’re talking about the wisdom, and in this case, style, shared between mother and daughter, icons and muses.

Exemplified by their long standing relationship with the eponymous French couture house Roger Vivier, Pat and Anna Cleveland are the embodiment of legacy and breakthrough style. The two are timelessly elegant and harmonious in their duet. And just as the perfect design blends heritage with contemporary flair, their relationship combines the wisdom of one generation with the perspective of the next—to not only honor the past, but evolve it.

As the new faces of Vivier’s Fall Icons campaign, the duo is living proof of how tradition and innovation enrich one another, and that even the most luminous legacy can continue to grow with each generation. We speak with Pat Cleveland on the cusp of the new year to discuss the realities of a family fashion legacy, the work it takes to maintain one’s sense of whimsy, and just what it takes to become an icon and to remain one.

Fashion, as a form of self-expression, can be empowering. How did you use your work to challenge or redefine ideas about beauty, race, and femininity, especially at a time when these conversations were just beginning to gain prominence?

Fashion can truly empower self-expression. It challenges beauty standards by celebrating diverse styles and body types. Designers often highlight unique cultural backgrounds, promoting inclusivity in race and femininity. By showcasing a variety of models, they redefine traditional norms. This pushes conversations around identity and beauty further, especially as awareness grows.

Speaking of self expression, how does your style reflect who you are?

My style is a reflection of my experiences, my passions, and my values. In any moment, I could change from one side of the moon to the other. Mostly I feel whimsical and confident when I dress up, and I also get this confident attitude when I am dressed well that makes me feel good, I can then reflect on that experience of dressing with passion and it makes me realize the value of having the dignity of dressing, I dress for my soul, My body is my temple. I am whimsical. I walk with the muses.

Watching your daughter pursue a similar path in fashion must be a unique experience. How did you navigate the balance between offering her guidance and allowing her to find her own way? What advice have you told her that you wish you had known earlier?

It’s been really special watching Anna; I have always given her space to explore while sharing my experiences. I think the key is listening and being supportive. One piece of advice I often share is to embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. I wish I had understood that earlier in my journey. It’s all about growth.

Roger Vivier is often considered a master of creating footwear that is both sculptural and wearable. How do you see their vision in your own work and lifestyle, particularly when it comes to balancing artistry with comfort and functionality?

I appreciate Roger Vivier’s approach. Balancing artistry and comfort is essential. In my own lifestyle I try to blend unique designs with practicality. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where style meets ease.

For someone who’s been an icon in the fashion world for decades, what do you think makes a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes truly timeless? And how do you see Roger Vivier’s designs as part of that?

A timeless piece has classic design, quality materials, and versatile style. It should be simple yet elegant, able to adapt to different trends. Think about pieces that never go out of fashion, like a little black dress or classic shoes. These items hold their appeal across generations. Roger Vivier’s designs blend elegance and innovation beautifully. His use of creative shapes and bold colors makes a statement. I admire how he balanced classic styles with modern flair, which aligns with my view that fashion should be both timeless and expressive. It’s all about confidence and individuality, right?

As someone who helped define the spirit of haute couture and given your rich history with Roger Vivier, how do you see Gherardo Felloni’s reinterpretations of Vivier as a natural progression for the brand?

Gherardo Felloni’s reinterpretations are a natural progression for the brand and show great vision; he has the ability to balance tradition and legacy with innovation and modernity. That’s a wonderful balance to achieve, and it can yield such unique pieces: the shoes, the bags, the vests, the story he creates: each carries its own story and character, the buckled shoes, the black and white accessories. They’re stylish and versatile, and they can really elevate any outfit.

And in terms of technology, sustainability, and inclusivity, what do you think has been the most exciting or impactful change you’ve witnessed over the years in the industry?

I think the rise of sustainable materials and ethical production is really exciting. Brands are focusing more on eco-friendly practices. This has led to greater awareness about inclusivity too, with diverse models and ethical choices it’s great to see fashion becoming more responsible.

You’ve allowed the world to see so much of your life and career. When it’s all said and done, what do you want your legacy to be?

I want my legacy to inspire others and show that kindness and creativity matter. Leaving a positive impact and encouraging people to pursue their passions is important to me.

How does your family specifically define beauty? How has that definition been passed through your lineage?

Beauty can mean different things to everyone. It’s often about kindness, confidence, or even appearance. These ideas are usually shared through stories, culture, and traditions within the family.

Where do you see the future of fashion? How are you helping forge a path to get there?

The future of fashion is likely to be more sustainable and inclusive, celebrating diversity and creativity. I can help by sharing ideas and trends and encouraging ethical choices and supporting creative expression.
