In 1879, Frédéric Boucheron commissioned French painter Paul Legrand to produce a drawing of a necklace. Legrand’s drawing—innovative in its clasp-free, asymmetrical style—gave birth to the Point d’Interrogation, the Question Mark Necklace, later awarded the Grand Prix at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The Question Mark Necklace revolutionized the very definition of high jewelry and remains a symbol of the Boucheron Maison today. More than 140 years after its creation, Boucheron pays tribute to the Question Mark Necklace with new and reinterpreted styles of the accessory.
After several years of development, Boucheron has crafted a new tailor-made reversible necklace. The front of the necklace is bold, seemingly dripping with blazing red rubellites, intense green tourmalines and deep blue tanzanites. The back of the necklace is contrastingly subtle, with custom-cut rock crystal and an added sparkle of pavé diamonds.
Boucheron has also released a new campaign showcasing reinterpreted designs that echo necklaces from the archive, and which continue to inspire the Boucheron Studio. In green hues of emeralds and rhodium-plated gold, the Lierre de Paris Question Mark Necklace pays homage to Legrand’s first drawing of the accessory, which depicted a necklace in the shape of a long strand of ivy.
The Plume de Paon Question Mark Necklace reflects the Maison’s historic motif of a peacock feather, with detailed strands of metal that mimic supple and imperfect beauty. And paying homage to an 1880 rendition of the Question Mark Necklace, the Laurier Question Mark Necklace reinvents the rendition’s laurel motif with rubellites that dangle from the leaves, like ripe fruit ready to be picked.
In a fresh and modern interpretation of the accessory, Boucheron’s Question Mark Eternity Necklace is a work of curved lines and simplicity. Its detachable center stone allows the necklace to be worn in two different styles: both as a striking necklace and as a streamlined choker. The necklace encapsulates the theme of multiwear, a defining feature of the Question Mark necklace and a value of the Maison.
