The LA Opera transformed the historic United Theater on Broadway into a thrilling stage for cinema and live music lovers alike this Halloween. Audiences were in for a spine-tingling experience with the rarely screened 1931 Spanish-language Drácula, complete with English subtitles. As this cult classic flickered across the screen, the night came alive with a mesmerizing new score, specially composed by two-time Oscar-winner Gustavo Santaolalla.
Conducted by Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados, the LA Opera Orchestra performed live alongside Santaolalla himself, who brought his unique sound as the featured guitar soloist. Special guest performers — violinist Javier Casalla, accordionist Michael Ward-Bergeman, renowned foley artist Joanna Fang, and foley mixer Blake Collins — added to the electrifying atmosphere. The score, orchestrated by David Campbell, created an immersive soundtrack that bridged past and present. With screenings set for October 25, 26, and 27, audience members were invited to embrace the season spirit and come dressed in costume, adding to the eerie elegance of this unforgettable cinematic experience.
