The name Sophie Thatcher may evoke the bleached blond wolf cut and fiery attitude of Nathalie Scatorccio in the hit psychological horror series, Yellowjackets, or perhaps the young actress's lead role in Pavement's "Harness Your Hopes" music video. Most recently, the 23-year-old appeared in A24’s MAXXXINE, in which she plays an SFX artist. In the wake of the movie’s release, Sophie reveals another side of her creative persona: the release of her debut EP.

Thatcher announced that Pivot & Scrape will be out on October 11,  marking the beginning of her musical career. While the face seen on TV is fragmented, she feels that her music captures the whole of her person. To build up excitement for the EP, she shares her newest single “Black and Blue" which showcases her sultry, swaying vocals and captures the eerie imagery with a music video directed by photographer Jason Renaud.

When asked about the song's origins, Sophie says, “I started out with a really lo-fi demo and this distorted drum beat that we ended up bringing into the background of the final mix. The lyrics came to me pretty early on; I was inspired by the idea of redemption and the power of guilt. I find myself always using biblical and religious inspiration for lyrics. I initially had strong imagery of a man asking for forgiveness after sinning and losing all of his teeth. This image stuck with me and I used it to drive me through the song.” Those familiar with Yellowjackets may note some aesthetic parallels, however, Sophie’s lyrics are deeply personal, inspired by a scooter accident and recurring nightmares of losing her teeth.

The EP’s title track, “Pivot and Scrape,” visualizes a ballerina cutting herself on glass, to which Thatcher comments, “The imagery felt really guttural.” Pivot & Scrape’s lyrics are abstract, but came to her within a moment, prompted by the melodies. Similar to the way Sophie prepares for an on-screen character, her songwriting process is ripe with improvisation.

Until October 11, fans can sample Sohpie's musical persona through her Spotify and YouTube where she shares over a hundred carefully curated playlists—the girl is truly music obsessed.
