Brooke Candy's Nymph
The Los Angeles native rapper and singer, [Brooke Candy](https://www.instagram.com/p/B5nl-VKgwNu/) is ready to release her music video for the first track off her debut album, SEXORCISM, which premiered last month.  Since the releasing, Candy has become an icon for girls everywhere with her political pop anthems that promote inclusivity and sex positivity.  Like all her tracks, “Nymph” celebrates her sexuality and personal growth through creativity and freedom of spirit.   Brooke Candy is known for her rejection of convention and expectations in her work, describing her music as subversive, spiteful, sexual, and spiritual.  Candy says, “It’s important for someone right now to push the envelope.  There needs to be an aggressive, body positive, angry, and unconventional female performer.  Girls need to see that.  Id like to be that lady and make a change.” Photographed by Betsy Johnson ![Photographed by Betsy Johnson](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bb80406c9f60e75a8efb_Brooke%2BCandy%2B1%2B-%2BCredit%2BBetsy%2BJohnson.jpeg) Photographed by [Betsy Johnson](https://www.instagram.com/betsyjohnson_/) **How would you describe how your sound has been evolving towards?** I started off making hip-hop and then signed a record deal and made pop music. After I left Sony, I tried something more industrial and now I’m back to hip hop but it’s more experimental with its sound.  I would describe my sound as ever-changing. My sound just seems to be a moment in time that captures my journey and expression. **How did you discover your talent in rapping and singing, how do you feel your relationship with collaborators have been?** I used music to empower myself but, for me, music always came after the visuals. I'm a visual artist first and a musician second. I think this career started off as a form of validation and a gateway towards a better life and now it's taken on something bigger. It's become a lesson for me to learn to love myself and be unafraid. A lesson on how to be impenetrable. All of my relationships have been a blessing. I'm grateful for any moment that I can learn from someone else's motivation, aesthetic, and skillset. **Who has influenced you the most as an artist sonically and visually?** Sonically, definitely Lil Kim, Mykki Blanco, and Kathleen Hannah. They’ve all influenced me a lot. Visually, I love John Waters and Tom of Finland. I find them both really inspiring. Nothing I do is meant to be taken literally or too seriously as it's satire, but I’d also love to inspire people to embrace all aspects of themselves. **What has going independent done for you as an artist?** It's given me more control and a sense of identity that was lost. It has given me the space to rediscover who I am which has boosted my confidence, too.  **If there was one thing you could change about the music industry, what would it be?** That’s a tough question. I think the system in place really complex and is geared towards specific narratives that not every artist can fit. I’d love to see the industry hold more space for weirdos and those artists that don’t fit into a certain mold. **Congrats on your debut album SEXORCISM release!  How does this project represent you and your creative vision?** Thank you! _SEXORCISM_ is who I am. It’s goofy, trashy, collaborative, and sexual… All the things I pride myself on being. How do you describe sex positivity?**  To me, sex positivity is being comfortable in your skin so you can allow other people to be comfortable in theirs. It's a simple as that. **And how would you say does your music go against convention and expectations?** Everything I do goes against convention, whether I want it to or not. I'm expected to act a certain way, sound a certain way, and look a certain way because of societal standards but I’ve never really listened to them. I've tried my hand at every genre and have shapeshifted my aesthetic into so many different visual worlds. I don't know where I fit in...and I think there’s something really special to be said about that. **What did you want to portray with your track, “Nymph”?** “Nymph” is a fun, whimsical glimpse into another dimension. It’s a mythological orgasm and a silly, fun trip down elf lane. **What was your vision and the creative process for the “Nymph” music video?** I made the song about a year ago with Carl Ryden and Chloe Black when I was dead sober, meditating every day, and fully obsessed with fairies and elves. When I was considering visuals for each song on the album, I wanted everything to feel really different and true to the song. My friend Betsey Johnson helped me come up with the creative, styled it, and helped scout out the location. She’s amazing. I directed it and my friend Kenny did the DP work. It was a really nice day hanging out and embodying the spirit of a mythological paradise Photographed by Cameron Tidball-Sciullo ![Photographed by Cameron Tidball-Sciullo](https://assets-global.website-files.com/62ee0bbe0c783a903ecc0ddb/6472bb80406c9f60e75a8f02_Brooke%2BCandy%2B3%2B-%2BCredit%2BCameron%2BTidball-Sciullo.jpeg) Photographed by [Cameron Tidball-Sciullo](https://www.instagram.com/cj__ts/?hl=en)
