Considered a sacred weekend for most who enjoy a great party, the electricity of Desert Daze fills your very essence, from the moment you call your boss to let him know Monday just isn’t happening. When the mind teleports to that magical place, a state of euphoria and bliss inhibits the soul from the moment they load their car and hit the road. When one arrives at the festival, it is like arriving at a psychedelic amusement park, or perhaps even heaven itself. Nestled in between a mountainous landscape, the peaceful park and sandy shores of Lake Perris hosts Desert Daze for its second year, and what a second year it was. Filled to the brim with amazing moments, glorious people, and tremendous musical performances, here are our 7 favorite things about Desert Daze 2021.   Location As is the story behind all great stories, a great, wondrous and vast scenic landscape must encapsulate our protagonists as they begin their quest. Much to the fortune of all, Lake Perris is not devoid of majesty, with the valley surrounded by mountains in the distance, and the lake’s gentle waves lending respite to the warm and weary. During both day and night, the placid energy lent an air of comfort and consistency to all persons in attendance. Donning a shirt during the daytime would be enough, were it not for the lake prompting one to strip down to board shorts or even undies and go for a dip. The nights, however, were in stark contrast to the climate of the daytime, but such is the desert and her ways. Jackets, scarves, and blankets were the norm after sundown, although most simply resorted to staying warm by simply doing what they do best: dancing. When it's all said and done, you retire to one of the campsites conveniently located adjacent to the festival for the nearest rest and relaxation. If you aren't camping or only showing up for one day, the convenient location of Lake Perris makes for an easy 2-hour commute to Los Angeles or 1.5 hours from San Diego. There you go, now there are zero excuses not to make the trek out next year.  The Lineup Typically at Desert Daze, one is usually treated to multiple stages simultaneously showcasing the best of music and talent. However, due to the immense impact the virus has had on festivals and the music community in general, this year's rendition was a considerably smaller scale than previous years. Despite the significantly scaled-down nature of this year’s event, it added a more intimate and therefore significant experience when watching a show. With everyone all at one stage, the performances were a seamless sequence, getting a dance party together was easier than ever, and with a good dance crew, the festivities were all but turnkey.  One learned all too quickly that Desert Daze 21 would not disappoint, with Friday’s festivities kicking off with none other than Tropa Magica providing the opening ceremonies. La Luz and Deap Vally played in the daytime, with DIIV jamming hard into the evening. Tim Heidecker & Weise Blood executed a beautiful folk rock set, but it was Ty Segall & Freedom Band who absolutely slaughtered Friday night. There is so much talent in the band, most notably bassist Mikal Cronin, who would effortlessly switch between his Moog and Rickenbacker bass, creating so many vibes for just one mortal man. The War On Drugs rounded off the night with a beautiful, emotional & riveting performance which saw the festivities for Friday come to a close.  With the first day out of the way, Saturday had its shares of intensely groove-laden moments, as well as the feel-good vibes, which did not disappoint in the least. The legendary Budos Band is a testament to this, with their rhythmic beats and hypnotizing bass lines. Andy Shauf’s smooth and psychedelic set was completed by the warmth and worldly colors of Devendra Banhart, who effortlessly seduced us all with his voice, rhythm, and melodies. As the father of the festival, Desert Daze mastermind Phil Pirrone and his band JJUUJUU did what they do best, and made their love for everyone in the attendance heard and seen. Though, it was Kamasi Washington who truly did the most Saturday, delivering what could be one of the most comprehensive Afro-centric jazz performances ever. On a spiritual level, you just felt something was significantly more poignant, heartfelt, and deeper than any other performance up to that point. One cannot complain about growing up in this era, because we have such a massive talent like Washington and his band to draw inspiration and hope from. As far as musicianship goes, Kamasi and company were untouchable.  With all the greatness of Saturday nicely wrapped up, all eyes were on the final day, the big day, Sunday. Since everything was already brilliant, you could only expect it to get better...and it absolutely did. For starters, Spelling and Sasami opened day three’s festivities, with none other than Black Angels returning to Desert Daze to bless us with a rock n roll sunset one could only dream of. Crumb’s airy, R&B vibes cruised us into the evening, complementing the wild psych rock sounds of Kikagaku Moyo. Hailing from Japan and making a return to the festival, it could be argued that Kikagaku Moyo stole the show Sunday, with their hypnotic and perfectly orchestrated symphony of psych on full tilt. Japanese Breakfast was also amazing as well, with her fun and whimsical delivery complementing the horns and the synth, creating such a dreamy mood. The festivities were rounded off with a dance party courtesy of none other than Toro Y Moi, bringing us up to that level we had been waiting for all day and night. With that, those who were ready to give the festival its proper send-off attended the closing ceremony with JJUUJJUU and friends. It was an epic 1-hour jam session that absolutely melted minds. On that dance floor, it was the faces of all my favorite new people just rocking as well. All in all, I would say the lineup had us grooving from start to finish, and with all things considered, they absolutely smashed it out of the park.  Aesthetic Surely, there is nothing you can compare to Desert Daze in terms of vibes. Since my initial experience in the deserts of Joshua Tree, the essence of this festival lends its aura to all in attendance, bringing to life a desert landscape brimming with neon, noise, and nature. The art installations extended far into the trees, and reached out to the beaches of Lake Perris, where at night, they turned the once monochromatic sands into a wavy, textured backdrop for a projector light show. Giant pyramids of television screens emanated images distorted figures in unison, leaving one mesmerized. And when one looked up above the stage, a psychedelic portrait of colors and shapes adorned the canopy overhead. If ever there was a moment where the music could be seen as well as heard, this would be it, with each band accompanied by a stellar visual performance on its own. On top of all that, the crowd was filled with festival-goers dressed to the nines with the weekend’s wardrobes surely able to give anyone at Studio 54 a run for their money. For all the freaks, stay groovy and make sure it shows.  Vendors Seldom times in our life do we ever attend a festival where the food is just as good, if not better than the outside world. But that's just how good Desert Daze is, curated down to the very taste bud. From the jerk chicken crew, the yerba mate folks, and the Indian food stand, the festival food was simply outstanding this year, with the yerba mate probably saving my day on two occasions in particular. The clothing vendors were also out of this world, serving looks from the local desert bandit to the gypsy queen, and everything in between. Forgot swim trunks? The vendors got you. Getting cold at night? They also have blankets and jackets on deck. Sun beating down on you? Thankfully, there is a milliner whose custom hats were all the craze. (As strange as it was, Gwynn’s Goods, a vintage retailer based in San Diego, CA, sold me a vintage Ralph Lauren leather shirt which I unintentionally wore on the first night of the festival. So needless to say, they picked the right man for the job!)  Staff The glue that binds us all together, major shouts of gratitude go out to the staff of Desert Daze 2021 who tirelessly labored day and night to curate such an epic experience for everyone to enjoy. An industry awash with callous creatures and vulturous entities, Desert Daze stands out from other music festivals with that extra layer of empathy and genuine concern for their attendants. For starters, security was simply mind-blowing, in the sense that you could enjoy a show with them, spend 40 minutes chatting about bands, and then come away with a new friend. But of course, safety remains the paramount focus. For those who did not have their vaccination card, covid tests were offered at the door to ensure the only negative result we all desire. Like years prior, one had the option of enjoying a sound bath to realign themselves, reinvigorate the soul, and prepare the mind and body for the next round of partying. However, the focus on self-care did not relent. The festival went so far as to coordinate a self-care sanctuary for those experiencing PTSD, abuse, or simply need a safe space. It is uncommon, if not rare, to see festivals go out of the way like this to accommodate attendees. Rarities like this remind us that the most charming thing any of us can do is simply take care of one another, with the best intentions in mind.  Camping As dusk breaks, the heat of the day awakens you with its radiance permeating your tent. The bite of the night’s cold is replaced by the sun's warm kiss. To wake up to the sounds of beers cracking open, musicians performing a soundcheck, the smell of neighbors cooking breakfast, and the sight of a beautiful landscape are characteristics immediately familiar to anyone who has been to Desert Daze. While getting your day started around camp, it is not uncharacteristic to run into captivating individuals, go to their camp, eat, drink and digress, discuss the machinations of the festival, the highlights of the night before, and years of brilliance prior. At night, when the music festivities officially conclude, dozens of campsites simultaneously re-light the torch, and just like that, the night is again buzzing with activity. Guitars, once held securely in their cases, are bursting with sound and vibrance as the songs and solos of camp are sung and played. Unsurprisingly, those who have spent the entire day dancing, swimming, and exploring the festival are so worn out, that none of the sights and sounds of night disturb their slumber. Such is the equilibrium achieved at respective campsites across the Lake Perris landscape.   Homies The zenith of all things Desert Daze related, nothing can even come close to the sensation of making new friends. For whatever reason, be it the lure of music, or the hand of fate, the people you cross paths with just resonate a purely electric vibration, becoming an attraction of the festival in itself. Friends and family made years ago are warmly embraced and old times are reminisced, while memories with new friends are fast and a-plenty, with smiles adorning the faces of loved ones. To bring ourselves closer to this side of humanity is a blessing. Imagine, you make friends, watch a show or two, then the next thing you know, we find ourselves playing acoustic guitar until sunrise, and months later, we find ourselves at a club in Brooklyn watching some rock n roll, and it all started at Desert Daze. The chef kisses his hand as we raise our glasses, and the universe smiles once again. Life is all about connecting the dots, and Desert Daze is never without a great story, that one chance encounter, or that one conversation that will leave you laughing, crying, or embracing a complete and total stranger in absolute happiness and gratitude for their presence.
