Kick-starting Game Of Thrones’ 10 year anniversary, luxury brand Fabergé has partnered with the shows renowned costume designer Michele Clapton to create a unique objet d’art that tells the story of Daenerys Targaryen’s quest to take her place on the Iron Throne. The commemorative egg resembles Daenerys’ dragon eggs with its intricate details and magnificent gems. The inside reveals a glorious surprise, a shining crown set with a pear-cut ruby symbolic of the one Daenerys would have worn had she continued to rule on the Iron Throne. FLAUNT had the chance to chat with Fabergé’s head designer Liisa Tallgren and Game of Thrones’ costume designer Michele Clapton about the creation of the commemorative egg. **Liisa Tallgren:** **What is an objet d’arts, what is its importance and history?** Like the name suggests, objet d’art is an “art object” or a work of art. It is often a small three-dimensional piece with no ‘practical’ function (so to speak) as it has been created to celebrate and highlight the skills of the craftsperson, and ultimately delight its owner or anyone admiring it. Because of the high skills needed to craft such a piece, the materials are often precious too. The Fabergé eggs created for the Tsar of Russia are a brilliant example of objet d’art: they displayed the extremely high skills and artistry of the jewelers while creating something personal and meaningful to the commissioner. Objet d’art often reflects the interests of the owner and are collectable.  **What role did you have in creating the Fabergé x Game of Thrones egg?** I translated Michelle Clapton’s beautiful concept and sketches into precious metal work: I redrew the objet taking into consideration gemstone sizes, width of metal, enamel cells, seams of the egg, gemstone setting styles etc.  **What was the inspiration for the FABERGÉ X GAME OF THRONES commemorative egg?** Game of Thrones was an epic TV series that deservedly captivated a huge audience. An immense amount of work went into creating that world, and their work is worth celebrating. The Fabergé Game of Thrones Egg aims to capture the journey of the Mother of Dragons, her highs and lows represented in lustrous enamel, deep red rubies, sparkling diamonds and blackened gold.  **Fabergé works with Gemfields, a world-leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones. Why is this of important to Fabergé?** It is important for Fabergé to use responsibly sourced gemstones because luxury should have no place for malpractices. Creating amazing designs is always a team effort and workers should be appreciated at every level. Gemfields run projects to improve health, education and livelihoods for the communities around our mines and conservation efforts to protect Africa’s great wildlife and biodiversity, which is incredibly important for building a better future. **Could you speak to the significance of family heirlooms and how this may intersect with the new Fabergé x Game of Throne egg?** Past is easily forgotten if it is not written down. Tangible objects help preserve memories that might otherwise not be remembered. Creating a work of art is a way of documenting and preserving the precious moment, whether the work of art is a painting, photograph or a building. When handed down for generations a work of art creates its own story that makes it even more precious. Family heirlooms are pieces that reflect the original owners tastes and interests, capturing a moment in time. Fabergé’s designer, Liisa Tallgren and I quickly found that we had a similar language of design and she was enormously generous in sharing the beautiful examples of Fabergé pieces that she and others had worked on. In turn, I spoke of the colour, texture and dragons that were very much part of Daenerys’ story, and together we explored how this could work within the design of the egg objet. My idea for the surprise to be the crown that Daenerys had pursued with such passion seemed instantly perfect to complete the story’s ending, it is what she had desired but was ultimately denied. **What elements from the costumes you created may be translated into the Fabergé x Game of Thrones egg?** We referenced the textures and colours that I chose to use in Daenerys’ costumes, which in turn were inspired by her life’s journey and her dragons. The beautiful smocking and embroidery were so much part of her look, and these provided wonderful texture ideas for Liisa to interpret into her work. Likewise with the colours, I was endlessly amazed at the beautiful range of colours that occur naturally in gemstones and the textures that can be created beneath enamel. **Could you speak to the surprise that lies inside of the egg? What does it mean and what is its significance?** The surprise came to me instantly, it just seemed so perfect that it should be the crown that Daenerys had pursued throughout the series, and it felt right that it was hidden here inside the egg that had in some way promised it to her. I also sought to use the wings of Drogon in the design of the crown to show his undying loyalty, and for her other two dragons to be recognised also. Finally, the ruby that represents not only her Sigil colour but also her passion. **What do you hope customers gather/gain from the Fabergé x Game of Thrones ?**  A sense of our mutual love of storytelling, craft and beauty.
