Miami Beach's contemporary art museum, The Bass, is set to hold Assume Vivid Astro Focus: XI, an installation running that will run for two years starting November 13, 2024, to October 26, 2026. Based in Gallery 5 of The Bass Museum, the XI exhibition will showcase a large-scale installation that covers the walls of the gallery with decal graphics, patterned wallpaper of vibrant colors, and video performances. This immersive setup invites a larger-scale experience where gender, politics, and cultural codes intertwine.
The São Paulo visual and performance art collective employs an innovative approach that fuses drawing, sculpture, video, and performance to foster dialogue between the curator and the visitors. Assume Vivid Astro Focus encourages visitors to engage meaningfully, creating live experiences that evolve and resonate beyond the gallery. The exhibition prominently features themes of Queerness, which pulse throughout XI.
Dating back to 2004, the exhibition was originally installed at the home of collectors Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, renowned for their collection of contemporary art. The 2004 edition, which premiered during Art Basel Miami Beach, generated excitement in the local arts scene and played a crucial role in establishing Miami as a prominent contemporary art destination. Now, the exhibit fully celebrates the de la Cruzes’ 2024 gift of "XI" to The Bass as a step toward addressing critical points of contention. On one side, it challenges conventional artistic practices within a context of growing social and political hostility toward differences. On the other, it provides an opportunity to initiate a dialogue on gender, politics, and cultural codes. XI encompasses exchanges that reflect an expanding hostility toward differences in today’s social and political climate. Its diverse manifestations encourage a multitude of reflections, making the exhibit a space designed to foster greater conversation, both visually and intellectually, while allowing for thought-provoking reimagining.
