This past week marked the inaugural edition of DESIGN MIAMI.LA, the global collectible design fair and marketplace. The five day fair, hosted at a Paul R. Williams designed Holmby Hills Estate, brought together a dynamic program of design galleries, talks, and commissions, celebrating the city's unique creative fabric. This year also marks the 20th anniversary of DESIGN MIAMI, which hosts fairs in Miami, Basel, and Paris.
As Design Miami Los Angeles Curatorial Director, Ashlee Harrison notes on the draw of coming to the West Coast, "California has always been fertile ground for risk-taking and avant-garde thinking across all realms of design. This edition of DESIGN MIAMI.LA will center on the themes of eclecticism, imagination, and nostalgia that have informed the city’s design landscape, bringing together some of the world's leading international design galleries and voices for the first time under one roof.”
Among the curated list of both LA-based and international exhibitors were Carpenter's Workshop Gallery, Twentieth, Southern Guild, and The Future Perfect. The fair also included an exhibition, PODIUM, Curated by Harrison, around the theme of "Master Works of Collectible Design, 1938 - Present." Paying homage to Hollywood's golden era, PODIUM brought together historic and contemporary works, a forum to explore innovation and craftsmanship in the design field.
The program also included several panel discussions with a range of artists and experts including Joseph Becker (Associate Curator of Architecture and Design at SFMoMA), Wendy Kaplan (Department Head and Curator, Decorative Arts and Design, Los Angeles County Museum of Art), and Key Jo Lee (Chief Of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs, Museum of the African Diaspora), and Artist Simon Haas (Haas Brothers).
Looking forward, Design Miami's next fair will take place in Basel, Switzerland June 10-16th, coinciding with the international art fair, Art Basel. Additional information about the fair is available HERE.
