With his signature blend of melancholic melodies and pulsating beats, Jan Blomqvist returns with MUTE, an album that explores the nuances of silence, introspection, and the emotional complexities of modern life. Known for his ability to fuse deep house rhythms with poignant storytelling, the Berlin-based producer and vocalist crafts a sonic journey that is both intimate and expansive. Across the album’s carefully woven tracks, Blomqvist delves into themes of solitude, transformation, and the delicate tension between movement and stillness, all while maintaining the hypnotic energy that has defined his sound.

In this exclusive track-by-track breakdown for Flaunt Magazine, Blomqvist offers a deeper look into the creative process behind MUTE, sharing the inspirations, emotions, and technique that shaped each song. From ethereal synth lines to haunting vocal hooks, he dissects the layers that make up his latest work, revealing how the album serves as both a personal reflection and a response to the chaotic world around him. Whether capturing moments of euphoria or quiet contemplation, MUTE stands as a testament to Blomqvist’s ability to make the unspoken resonate—proof that sometimes, silence speaks the loudest.

  1. Left unsaid

Every album needs an intro. And as it’s often the case, the intro was made last. Our idea this time was to create a track that gradually sinks into a sea of noise and that can also be used as an intro during the tour. Mission accomplished! Fun fact: The vocals only took 2 takes to be done.

  1. Underwater

Underwater was published as a single not long ago. It’s an anthem to resilience and strength that is supposed to create hope in dark and uncertain times. It’s supposed to remind us that we should not give up.

  1. Destination Lost

Destination Lost is the first of a series of collabs on the album and has also been already released as a single in 2024. I am very happy to have been able to work with one of my heroes, Rodriguez Jr. to create this bouncy and dreamy bad boy.

  1. Midnight Sun

Wonderful Natascha Polké

Breaking news: Two renowned scientists, Natascha Polké and Jan Blomqvist, have been working hard to capture the sound sunlight makes when hitting the dark.

  1. Stranded

Stranded is a collab with Bondi. We had been working on this one for quite some time and then somehow got stuck in the middle. There was no moving forward.  Bondi then came up with a completely new approach and we finally managed to make it happen. Love the outcome. Sometimes the way is rockier than usual.

  1. Algorithm

The lyrics to this track are older than the music as they were written years ago in Berlin with my Berlin soul sister Joplyn. Now came the time for them to shine on the Algoritm track which is my favorite on the album. The track tells the love story between a human and an AI. It took many hours of work, a lot of new starts and frustration, blood, sweat and tears to take it to the finishing line. But oh, it was so worth it. Fun fact: With 105 bpm, it’s my slowest track so far. It’s fun to start it at concerts and see the audiences’ reaction because at the beginning they don’t know what to make of it.

  1. The Robot Test

This one comes with a bit of personal history: My friend Geo, who was part of the team that arranged my first ever gig at Burning man in 2016, suddenly died. Maybe Mahri and me wrote the lyrics together, distressed by the loss of our common friend Geo.

  1. New Silence

Like Algorithm, this one also took a couple of tries to work. The vocals did already exist but we could not find the right approach for the instrumental part. Shortly before our mastering deadline, really the very last minute, we restarted, trashing the status quo and used parts of a remix we once did for Booka Shade. Thanks guys for being so easy about this. :-)

  1. Disappear again

I am really proud to have my friend Marvin aka Beobe on the album. He is a true friend and one of the most talented singers out there. He is opening the nights during the European leg of the MUTE tour. If you miss him on the tour check out his spotify

  1. Traceless Tracks

Not quite my typical vocals but definitely one of the best beats on the album :)

Insgesamt ein schöner etwas ausgefallener Album Track der aber sehr gut reinpasst. vocal ist runtergepitched.

  1. Muted Mind

Guys, this is a very exciting one for me! It‘s the first solo track released on my very own label Disconnected! I have warm memories ofl the video shooting.. it  was recorded at the Fly With Me Festival in Leipzig. Head over to YouTube and check it out!

  1. So It Is

that's a wrap! Mission accomplished. I couldnt think of any better way to bring MUTE to its conclusion. So it is.. that’s the Album.
