A night in Los Angeles is a blank canvas. The places we go, the art we see, and the people we meet paint that canvas with glorious colors and deep shades of experience. In our increasingly divided world, the illusion of separateness is pervasive as ever. This underlines the vital importance of public art as a unifying, gravitational force that pulls us back together. The night of October 5th marks LUMINEX, now in its third year, bringing nine multimedia artists together to transform downtown LA into an art-video experience.
The distinctive architecture of the historic South Park District frames the work of internationally acclaimed and emerging Los Angeles-based artists. LUMINEX is walkable and collaborative, unifying a diverse audience underneath a single skyline and a collection of screens. It is as a platform for artists to tell their stories and convey their messages in modern, interactive ways. Viewers can step into the art and feel its trance reflect off of the buildings, the dark sky, and their own eyes.
As this world changes, its art changes. LUMINEX is an event that pushes against the boundaries and definitions of art as we know it, embracing performance art, dance, sculpture, light, sound, fiction, and technology. Curated by Carmen Zella, Chief Curator of NXT Art Foundation and NOW Art, LUMINEX prioritizes accessibility, offering pedicabs for navigating the exhibition route. This year features artists JOJO ABOT, Refik Anadol, Alice Bucknell, Nao Bustamante, Petra Cortright, Marc Horowitz, Carole Kim, and Sarah Rara, exploring a diverse spectrum of themes, emotions, and commentary through their art.
Zella says, "It's a curator's dream, and the magic that unfolds is unparalleled to anything I’ve ever been a part of or witnessed.”
The event is one night only, free and open to all on October 5th. Pedicabs can be booked and details can be found on the LUMINEX website.
