I once traveled to London for over a week with nothing but a carry-on. A chronic under-packer, I purposely left my tiny luggage half-empty, leaving behind jeans and shoes in favor of the knick-knacks I know I’m bound to collect during my travels. Physical souvenirs are mementos from time spent away from home, precious gems that I can hold and touch between my airplane-air-dried fingertips: copies of Joan Didion from Notting Hill, chipped coffee mugs from Camden, leather purses stuffed with posters from Portobello Road.
Luxury Group, Marriott’s starting line-up of eight luxury hotel brands, understands the connection between travel and souvenir better than most. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Sotheby’s, an international auction house, Luxury Group attempts to meld the boundaries between collectible and travel with biddable itineraries. Using Sotheby’s Sealed, Sotheby’s protected online auction platform, Marriott’s eight hotels offer hotel-goers collectible journeys that are just as romantic as a souvenir itself.
The first two brainchildren to spur from the collaboration—keenly christened, “Iconic Pieces. Exceptional Experiences”—are presented by Luxury Group’s EDITION and The Ritz-Carlton. The London EDITION offers winning bidders the "Alexander McQueen Disovery" sealed auction experience, where exclusive winners receive a two-night stay in a luxurious suite at the EDITION, a five-course dinner at Michelin-starred Chef Jason Atherton’s Berners Tavern, a private tour of the Victoria & Albert Museum, and a personalized photography session by Ann Ray, McQueen’s longtime collaborator.
Meanwhile, The Ritz-Carlton matches the EDITION’s glory with a “Whiskey Reverie,” where the New York City-based hotel will turn country for the night. This package will see a two-night stay at The Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad and private dinner at The Bazaar by José Andrés. Dinner will be joined by Fawn Weaver, the founder of Uncle Nearest (premium Tennessee whiskey) and the New York Times bestselling author of Love & Whiskey. And, the city isn’t the limit for the NoMad, as the “Whiskey Reverie” will swirl into a suite stay at The Joseph, a Luxury Collection hotel, in Nashville, Tennessee. VIPs of Luxury Group and Sotheby’s have already enjoyed a Whiskey and Watches masterclass, which saw the intersection of jewelry and distillery.
Both packages will be offered until September 13 through Sotheby’s Sealed. The collaboration leaves even under-packers overwhelmed by wanderlust, with luxurious experiences being the trinkets shoved into suitcases and tucked in the enfolds of one's treasured memory.
