An anime dating simulator that does your taxes. A Louis Vuitton bag of microscopic proportions. An AI feet pic generator. In the past few years, MSCHF has been reaching virality through projects that utilize absurdity to critique capitalism and consumerism. Now, fans of the provocative art collective can view these iconic projects from home with the launch of the brand’s book, Made by MSCHF, out via Phaidon Press.
Reaching nearly 400 pages, the book dissects twelve of the company’s most iconic launches. Separated into two sections, Absurd Systems and Absurd Objects, Made by MSCHF explores each project from its genesis to its release and reception. Made by MSCHF also further highlights the anticapitalist rhetoric behind these seemingly nonsensical products. In the chapter on the aforementioned AI feet pic simulator, for example, MSCHF goes in depth on the ethics of AI usage–a topical discussion in a post ChatGPT world. Beyond just the gimmick of absurdity, Made by MSCHF highlights the political and ethical logic behind each MSCHF launch.
Before its in depth look at MSCHF’s viral projects, the book begins with a look at the company’s internal handbook. Made in 2019, this handbook highlights the company’s core values while maintaining the cheeky presentation they are known for–with pages dedicated to how ‘GOLF SUCKS NOW AND HAS ALWAYS SUCKED’ and ‘THE ENDS DO JUSTIFY THE MEMES’. Though previously hidden from the public, Made by MSCHF gives the world a peek at the company’s internal handbook for the first time.
Though the company began as a small group of friends launching viral and novel projects biweekly, MSCHF has since grown into a household name in the pop culture and arts scenes. Made by MSCHF is a testament to the company’s creativity and finger-on-the-pulse understanding of today’s pop culture landscape. The book is currently available for preorder here, with shipment beginning March 5th.
