Curving silhouettes draped in soft armor move in formation in the Opera de Paris’ latest ballet titled “Pit”–a piece inspired by the sensual and the dramatic. The dancers are wearing custom costumes by Alaïa creative director Pieter Mulier, designed specifically with shapes and fabrics that evoke the humanity of the performers and enhance their movements.

Choreographed by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, both former Batsheva Dance Group dancers, the work requires a certain freedom of expression from the dancers that the signature Alaïa materials are ideal for. The duo approached Mulier, trusting the designer to help complete their artistic vision. This collaboration calls upon Alaïa’s unique history of creating fashion that meets art and beauty.
