This Summer Christo and Jeanne-Claude are unveiling their first large scale project in over 10 years
From June 18th to July 3, 2016, collaborative artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude will unveil their first large scale project in over 10 years. The exhibition, aptly titled The Floating Piers, will incorporate 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric that will serve to cover the 206,561 polyethylene cubes connecting the islands of Lake Iseo, Italy. Those who attend the exhibition will experience it through interaction. Visitors are expected to walk on the modulated piers from Suzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paulo of which it encircles.
In order to view the piers in their entirety, spectators must observe them from the surrounding mountains where they’ll be able to witness certain angles and altering perspectives that would otherwise go unexposed. The piers will create a 3 kilometers long, 16 meters wide walkway that’s 35 centimeters in width with sloping sides. The yellow fabric will be wrapped around the docks and will extend onto 1.5 kilometers of pedestrian streets in Sulzano and Peschiera Maraglio. The project will be funded by the selling of Christo’s original works or art, and after the 16th day, the materials used for the floating docks will be recycled.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s other Italian based projects include: Wrapped Fountain and Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto, 1968; Wrapped Monuments in Milan, 1970; and The Wall - Wrapped Roman Wall in Rome, 1973-74.
