Animated short _Nuevo Rico_, directed by Kristian Mercado Figueroa, will premiere at the 2021 South by Southwest Film Festival. The film tells the journey of a sister, Barbie, and her brother, Vico, as they stumble upon a celestial secret that changes their lives forever and propels them into Reggaetón stardom, but fame comes at a cost. The pair has to navigate not being torn apart by the music industry.
Their story starts in a dystopian future version of Puerto Rico, Nuevo Rico. ‘Nuevo Rico’ explores a futuristic Puerto Rico in a new radical way, a future that isn’t a reflection of it’s current problems.
“Barbie & Vico represent a visual spectrum of animation lacking in the world. Nuevo Rico is a defiant gesture of Latinx representation missing in the mainstream,” Director Kristian Mercado Figueroa says.
